Installed new radio and now wondering about putting a USB jack in the glove box...

Radio went out last weekend on my '00 SANTE so I ordered a new Sony CDX-M6OUI. Pretty cool unit which comes with a USB port for IPOD control. The radio in the '00 SANTE's is next to the throttle and I would prefer not to mount my IPOD over there. What I'm now wondering is if I can run a usb cable to the glove box and install one of the ipod/usb jacks that Nautique is putting in their newer boats. Do any of you have experience with putting one of these in? If so, where would one purchase such a jack? I've looked around online but can't seem to find anything that would work.

    Thanks for the help.

Clarion makes a USB extension cord - CCAUSB. I would make sure it's long enough before ordering. Has a nice waterproof cap for when not in use.

      Ipod USB Extension

I was able to get just enough length out of the combination of the Sony usb cable and the Ipod usb cable to reach my glove box and give about 18" to spare. I noticed the mention of a Clarion USB extension but haven't seen any use on the Sony. I tried a generic usb extension on the Sony and received an error so I read up and Sony doesn't support an extension cable at this time. So, not sure if the Clarion would work on not, so my advice is to check the length and see if you can swing it without one first.

        Paul,

I have a new 2010 226 with the USB ports on the Clarion stereo, and neither of them seem to work with my IPOD. I read another thread on here under the stero section stating it is a known issue by Correct Craft...the one in the glove box is running TOO long of a cable, the one by the driver only supports devices used for the Lync system???
I ended up using the headphone jack in the glove box for my IPOD and tuned the unit to AUX2 to get it to play. The headphone jack on mine by the driver is loose (in a sealed plastic holder...couldn't tighten on my own) and only works if you push it to the side and hold it. Short story is.....of the 4 places to plug an IPOD/IPhone in this brand new boat...only one of mine works...but sadly, it does not charge the IPOD like the USB would. Oh well, the girls weren't completely without Lady GaGa for the 4th....lol. Good luck with your stereo.

Thanks Ken. That sucks to have a brand new boat and the stereo not completely work. I talked to the guys up at Buxton Marine here in Dallas today and they just suggested leaving it the way it is without cutting in to the glovebox. After y'alls take, I think I'll just mount my ipod under the dash so the 6 ft cable on the Sony works without extending it. Pretty nice setup for only $200 on ebay. Sony radio shows all the playlists and can be controlled by 2 of the wired remotes which is nice.

If you check out one of my threads on here you will read all about my experience with a USB connection.
Im not sure about the Sony receiver but the Clarion just has a standard usb cable coming out the back of it
that any extention cable or accessory cable can plug into. With the Clarion unit a cable that is too long causes a timing issue and won't work on the ipod/iphone. The Accessory CC uses has both a usb and aux 1/8" with a nice cover that protects it when not in use. I found a place online that has 6 left that are the right lenth 6' or you could get 12' ones direct from the main supplier.

The usb puts out 12v and the iphone requires 5v. You can get an adapter the will fit on the iphone/ipod cable and convert it to work for charging from the usb port. You can find them cheap on ebay.

Thanks Actman. I'll look into it. It was your thread I saw regarding the long cables on the USB.
                Have a good one.
