Hi! 1993 Ski Nautique checked with hose prior to first time on lake this summer. Pardon improper terms but will do my best. On trailer while running water through system the engine temp stayed under 140 degrees. Impeller site cold to touch so water was being pulled through. Water filled into gasket strainer-thingy, water came out of bottom of boat (?water intake) and out back of boat appropriately. No hoses kinked. Only thing was oil pressure was high in spite of level being normal. Took boat on lake and engine went to 200 degrees in 1-2 minutes time. Impeller site was extremely hot. Turned off engine immediately and tried restarting a couple of times once engine cooled and immediate overheating started again. (Impeller changed 2 years ago). Brought home rechecked with hose hookup and engine cooled, impeller area cold to touch again. Should we still visually inspect the impeller? Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

You almost certainly have a bad impeller. The hose will FORCE water through the system, whereas at the lake the impeller must do the work to push the water through the system. Open up the water pump, and I bet you'll find a totally shredded impeller.
The impeller you need is below. If you order from White Lake, be sure to use the PlanetNautique discount code (PND) for a 10% discount.

Yep, that is precisely why I drop a hose into a bucket and have the impeller suck the water up and not simply have water pressure force water through the motor.
Take a look at your impeller. I'm sure it's damaged. Good news is that it's a cheap and easy fix, but you will want to get all the impeller chunks out.

Thanks! Confirmed what I suspected and also helpful explanation!
I have a 2 yr old sherwood impeller new in box. Still okay to use this one if never opened? Thanks for the link. I will plan on purchasing one to have on hand for the next change.

Will check too. Was not screwing on well at home so placed plumber tape around it so threads were tight. Seemed fine after that.

Ah-ha!
Now that's what I should've done...and will do from NOW ON! Thanks for the tip. I think I may have been shown to do it that way years ago when I first bought my boat and just forgot over the years!

As to an impeller sitting around 2 years in the package, they sit at dealerships longer than that sometimes with no issues.

93 Nautique
93 Nautique overheated in the lake but ran fine with the garden hose. I've taken everyone's advice and replaced the impeller (the old one looked fine) and now want to retest. However, would like to use a bucket of water rather than the house water pressure. The Nautique has a water hose connection in the line right after the lake water intake, but do I have to somehow close off the standard water intake so the impeller will pull in the water from the bucket instead of just air? Thanks much.
