    Surf Weighting a 98-99 Air / Sport

Okay folks, I think I finally found a good to great surf setup for 98-99 Air/Sport CC's. Yesterday I ran my plumbed ballast (2 x V-drive sacs in the stern locker end-to-end left to right full (appx. 800 lbs), belly sac and integrated bow sac about 3/4 full (appx. 800 lbs), a V-drive sac full on the rear seat left to right but on the surf side so it went from a little over the middle mark of the seat to the end of the seat on the surf side (appx. 400 lbs), and a V-drive sac along the motor box on the floor of the surf side touching the back seat base on the back end (appx. 400 lbs). This surfed great. The sweet spot was rather large, and I was able to recover nicely (this is only my second time successfully surfing any boat). This was all on the port side as I ride regular footed.

Two notes. First, I had no one in the boat but the driver. Second, I will have to figure out a way to keep the v-drive sac on the rear seat. At one point it rolled forward off the seat and onto the floor and back end of the motor box. This completely changed the wake and made is unsurfable (at least for me). I would not have thought such a small change (moving the weight about 18" forward, but still the same left to right) would have made a difference, but immediately after this happened I could not find a sufable pocket, whereas before this, I could find it easily as soon as the boat planed.

I generally believe this is good news, as v-drive sacs come in pairs and are generally on the less expensive end of sacs. Having 2 is also more versatile than 1 large surf sac or the custom surf sacs that go around the motor box, which based on my limited experience with what happened when the v-drive sac rolled forward, would not work as well anyway (at least with the rest of the weight configuration I was running).

We put a throwable life saving cushion under the front side of our sacs to keep them from rolling forward. Make sure you have another one available just in case you need it.

This is a fantastic idea. So simple, so inexpensive, and effective. Thank you.
