    Perfect Pass

I have an 89 BFN. Is it possible to install perfect pass in a boat this old? If so, what type of mods need to happen?

No Mods needed. Standard Mechanical system will work fine. Just need to know what engine and what size gauge and face color.
You can get Your perfect Pass Thru Florida Inboards inc. www.floridainboards.com

Boat has 454 w/ stock CC gauges for the 89 model. Where does the new gauge go? There isn't much room in the dash. What does a typical install involve?

You replace one of your Airguide speedometers with it---typically the right one.

Install involves replacement of speedometer with perfect pass display, installation of throttle linkage, routing of cables from the master module (typically on the kick panel or somewhere under the bow) to bilge to connect with wiring from throttle linkage, routing of wires to gauge from master module, routing of gps puck or paddle wheel depending on the system you get, and drilling of hole in hull and installation of paddle wheel unless you get Stargazer in which case, no paddle wheel is required.

The above is sort of out of order, but I think that's about it. Typically billed as a 2.5 hour or so install if they have to drill for the paddle wheel. Without, I'd guess 1.5--2.0 hours. On my 98, with the in floor cooler, routing the wiring to the bilge between the cooler and the stringer was a huge pain (throttle cable was zip tied and wasn't any good as a snake). Finally gave up and got the dealer to do it.

If it is ok with you, could you tell me what you paid the dealer to install PP.
I'm about to buy StarGazer for my 97 Ski, and would have the dealer do the install.

Star Gazer Mechanical delivered to your door $1145.00 (Retail is $1195 plus $50 shipping).
Depending if you have flush mount or old style speedo will depend on where you mount the display. If it is the old style I would mount it where the tach is as the PP has a digital tach along with speed read out.
I usally get $170.00 To install, If I have to take it to the lake and lake and water test another $85.00.

Stargazer doesn't require drilling a hole in the hull for a paddle wheel? Can GPS puck be mounted on dash behind the mirror and windshield? Would be out of the way there. What is the cost difference between the two types? Is one more reliable than the other?

You can only get one type that is A star Gazer system. Not sure why any one would want a paddle wheel system any more but hey to each their own.
Yes the Puck can be mounted under the wind screen behind the mirror. Malibu was mounting them under the fiberglass deck of their boats they worked just fine.
Only price difference is if you want a three event system it is another $200.00 for a smart timer.
you can go to www.perfectpass.com and get all the information that they have to offer. they do a good job of getting any information of their products on line.

Thanks for all the input. I was confused about the paddle wheel because the guy minding the desk at the local place was talking about needing one. I wasn't thrilled with drilling a hole in my hull...could just be me. The perfectpass site was a great help. Now to decide which model to get...

I agree with Jody that there's not much of a good reason to install as system with the paddle wheel. I only mentioned it because Perfect Pass still offers a request only upgrade that uses the paddle wheel to run in speed based mode in a situation with a river current. Having taken their advice and having tried to free ski in speed mode way back when, I'd just go in GPS practice mode and adjust down until the speed felt right. But you never know.

The placement on the dash of the GPS puck is fine and there is no signal interference from the frame or the bimini top. It's also really easy to snake the cord for the puck under the dash pod in that location.

Ati, when I originally bought Perfect Pass, it was a digital pro system. I was charged around $145 for the install, which included drilling and installation of the paddle wheel. When I upgraded to SG in February 2008, I installed it myself. It only involved a master module swap and mounting and routing the GPS antenna/antenna cable.

Sounds like I can do this myself. Owning the boat since new, I have a pretty good idea of how everything works, although all the maintenance has been routine so far, which after 20 years is really amazing. It's not a lemon.
