2011 models from MC / BU

I've seen some pictures posted up on wakeworld of the 2011 MC and BU boats. I'm not sure if you guys saw any of those photos. I'm not here to hate on any other brand, because I think MC and BU both make great boats. I'm just shocked that BU and MC are both offering supercharged motors for 2011. Do we really need 600hp in a boat that only goes 40mph? I owned a 2007 VLX with the 340 monsoon motor and I thought it was plenty, even with tons and tons of added weight. I wonder if CC is considering dropping a rediculous formula one engine in anything any time soon. I hope not.

The new BU's have two touch screens in them also. When is all this crazy expensive boat bling going to end? Don't get me wrong, I love my SANTE 230 and the LINC system, but these "upgrades" are getting a little out of control. What happens down the road when the warranty period expires and all of these 15k supercharged engines need work and/or electronic issues crop up. These eaton blowers are not trouble free and require more maintenance than most people think.

I'm guessing you will only see those engines in limited number like our boats with the Python in them. It will be a very expensive option that very few people will spring for. A few years down the road I don't think they will get the kind of attention 210's with Pythons get now though. The maintenance will be painful I think.

IMHO MC/BU have been all about bling factor for the last few years.... Form over function. Don't get me wrong though, they do offer some great boats that will throw some huge wakes, but I could do without all the pretty stuff like CNC machined towers and big touch screen displays. Just give me a good looking boat that's not over the top and it just works!

one day i'm making a boat myself. it'll have a crusader engine, s.s. everything, 3 ballast bags(two rear, one front) with no guages, jabsco pumps, zero off, powder coated 4 leg tower, mc style racks, a small wet sounds system, and a plain old single or tandem trailer with no bling whatsoever, keyed ignition, no coolers, and done.

In talking with David from White Lake at the boat show last year, he commented that the LINC system specifically DOESN'T use touch screen technology because of the potential issues being used in an outdoor environment, as well as the pounding and vibration that these boats produce.

I have a feeling that BU and MC are going to see a lot of warranty service work with this touchscreen stuff. For those customers whose boats are out of warranty, be prepared to fork out some major bucks to replace bad units.

Gride - funny you mentioned this. I talked with some friends up at the lake about buying an older 24-26 ft. inboard fishing/other boat to turn into a pure wakesurfing boat. Strip everything out, replace the motor with a diesel, and build ballast lockers to put Fat Sacs all in the back and sides all the way up to the bow. Ballast would be controlled by a console panel of switches running Jabsco pumps and valves.

I saw a Youtube video (can't find it now), where a guy did this and it put out a surf wake that was HUGE!! Based on the rider's size, the wake looked to be 4-5 feet tall and he was able to ride a good 15-20 feet behind the transom.

I think this will be a good retirement project for me and the buds!!

ya that sounds fun for sure. assuming i hold on to my 210 forever i would love to rip the interior aka top deck out and redesign the whole thing on such a great hull. it would be laid out similar to current boats with rider facing seating, but none of the reversible, moveable stuff. i'd put dual batteries on port side to help counter when it's just a driver, 750's on either side of the motor, and a custom sac that fills the bow floor and ski locker, a simple narrow walk through on the rear to the platform, closing vents for surfing, locking glove box, 4 cockpit speakers, two tower speakers, 10" sub, simple bimini w/ quick releases, and the list goes on. the design would be based in order on function, quality, ease of service for all aspects. i wish i had the money to tackle this because it would be a great end result.

hmm. you put function ahead of quality, but aren't designing to make it easy to replace...

before you have anything of quality you have to have it function the way it's supposed to function. then you make sure it's top quality, then you make sure it's easily serviceable.

Eaton blowers (positive displacement sit on top of manifold type) are really pretty much maintenance free. Even when GM and ford were throwing those on their respective 3.8 v6s, upping the power considerably, the only thing that went wrong was really head gaskets. Gasket tech has come a long way since the 90's.

At first glance I would say the touch screen is a bad idea, but I fish off shore and the boat we have has two 12" touch screen Garmin Chart Plotters. They control everything from the radar, XM radio/weather, engine gauges and sonar . We touch them with dirty fish hands all the time and then just wipe them down. They have been really reliable. The difference is I can go down to West Marine and buy a replacement and stick it in there if one does crap out. I personally would not want this on a ski boat though. Replacement down the road is probably going to be killer. Especially 10 or 15 years from now.

but would you sacrifice function for quality? It's easy to say you want both and you hope for both, but sometimes you have to decide. Most businesses preach quality, but when it gets down to it there is a balance between function, quality, and the driving force of cost.

Anyway, good luck on your project.

I owned by an '02 ford lightning and a blown cts-v. Both used intercooled eaton blowers. I had problems with both supercharger systems. Several of my friends have had issues with their cobras. Even if you don't have issues, you still have to change blower oil every few years. It's just more maintanence and more liklihood of failure is all I'm saying.

The touch screen possibly failing is a good point. Does anyone have any info on how the Link is holding up? I personally haven't read or heard any horror stories yet, but it's still relatively new.
