Does anyone run their engine briefly after they've pulled it out of the water?

I went on a trip recently and noticed my brother-in-law would quickly start up his jet skis after he pulled them out of the water. He helped me pull my SANTE220 out of the water and after we were done wiping it down, etc. he asked my if I started the engine up real quick to help get the water out of it. I said no and I think it seems pretty dangerous in terms of potentials for screwing up your engine.

    Does anyone do that?

Their is no need to start the engine once you pulled it from the water, however if you run in salt water you should flush and run the motor thru a fresh water flush system. Or not Their are a lot of us that can use the work this winter!!

Most of the water drains out of the engine I believe, except for some in the raw water pump. I wouldnt want that to drain completely anyway, because it takes a moment for the water to enter that area once the boat is restarted (in the water on the next trip), and I would want that time frame to be as short as possible (not sure if that made any sense)

Starting the engine after pulling out of the water in a boat is a bad idea. Jet skis call for it in the manual as it clears water out of exhaust and jet pump. Don't do it to your boat.

I always wondered why the "ski" guys did this and thought is was pretty annoying. I came across and older WaveRunner and sure enough, the manual calls for it. I guess I am annoying once in a while.

I never run the boat like this.

DO NOT RUN YOUR BOAT WITHOUT SUPPLYING WATER TO THE RAW WATER PUMP!
It has to have a constant supply of water to not destroy the impeller.

Alright, it sounds like we're all in agreement. I'll tell my bro-in-law to let it go and not to do it to his Tige, which I'm pretty sure he might do.

Burn up one impeller and lodge all the rubber pieces in the water lines into the engine and you won't ever do it again! The impeller gets very hot if it does not have water cooling it!

I don't do it. However impellers are a bit more forgiving than most of you tend to believe, especially if you replace them annually as we should.

My boat motor is extremely quiet (Excal in a 211). One time my nephew pulled drove the boat on the trailer, I drove the truck and pulled it up the launch ramp and over to the washdown area. When I jumped out of the truck I heard a motor running faintly and thought who is the goofball that is running his boat out of the water. That goofball was me, because my nephew had forgotten to turn it off! It probably ran for 1-2 minutes and the impeller lasted the rest of the season. When I changed that impeller it didn't even look damaged, I was surprised.

Against all recommendations I do bump the motor until it fires everytime before launching. I do it because it's usually my wife and sister in the boat and I don't want them to get stuck in a boat that won't run for any unknown reason. It runs for less than 5 seconds and I have been doing since the boat was new. I doubt it even has time to spin the impeller dry. That said I don't condone the practice for others.
