WB first time on boom

Yesterday on Lake Sammamish. File 85 shows the ready position, file 88 shows him up and file 100 is the money shot!

Using a BI Tower Boom with the "chop down" handle for small hands. Thanks to Mike Seipel at Barefoot International and those here who suggested using the boom as a teaching aid.

Right after this session, the older son of the two (who learned to double ski on the boom in 2008, and who has been deep water starting since last year) used the boom to learn to slalom for his first time.

I like to see them ride with the board going sideways for a while before they move into that position. I pull kid every very slowly and ask them if I should go faster or slower after every fall. Taught a friends 6 year old daughter a few months ago, she loved it. If possible I use the slalom boat to teach kids since it's easier to run at 8-12mph than it is with a v-drive boat.

I agree. I figure out which side of the boat they need to be on (reg/goofy) and put them way out to the side. Then I tell them to lean back as we start and let their weight balance the edging....and tell them to stay outside the wake until they learn to control the board. (use a shorter rope maybe 50')

Everyone gets pulled over a few times and them I tell them I need them sliding out the back not getting pulled over the front. Focus on leaning back. "It is okay to slide out the back! Sliding out the back is good!!! Do not go out the front." Generally they slide out the back only once or twice and then they get it. Falling out the front can go on forever.

Driver participation is critical. Acceleration must be very slow, settle out speed should be slow (maybe 11/12 mph), and start letting off that throttle smoothly and early to prevent rope slack as the boat planes and the rider stands. That spells instant doom to a newby.

I have a boom and have not yet used it for any training. Everyone learns deep starts from the start.
