    Depth finder question

Our lake is a couple of feet low and I don't want to get stuck with our boat hanging in the lift and not enough water to get it out. Our depth finder reads a little over 3' at the back of our dock, is that from the bottom of the hull or is the depth finder some how callibrated to figure out the distance from prop to the bottom?

ITs based on where the transducer "puck" is mounted...plus what ever offset is set in there for an additional safety margin.

Look for the puck somewhere in the bilge...

Is there a way to tell what the safety margine is set at? So assuming the puck is located around the bilge, at least I can assume it's not reading actual water depth but more bottom of hull to bottom of lake? If I have 3 feet from bottom of hull to bottom of lake I'm not real worried.

As long as the boat is floating when the lift is down you should be fine. I put in on a very gradual slope in our lake and when the boat starts floating the depth finder is reading at like a foot and a half or two feet. Over 3 ft should be plenty. Push it out by hand if you are not sure about it.

I would not count on the depth sounder to be accurate enough to do what you want it to.
When I have to go into shallow water, I shut the engine off, and get out of the boat, and push it, or row the boat with a ski or an oar. Another option is a long pole, and just push off the bottom.
I know it is not convenient, but neither is removing the propeller, and getting it repaired.

Thanks for the info, I don't make it a habit to go in shallow water, just more concerned weather I should pull the boat out and put it in storage and drop it in every weekend we go out to avoid having it stuck in the lift. I would really be disappointed in myself if I let it get too shallow to get the boat off the lift and it sat there and deteriorated until the water level came back up. My parents had theirs in their lift for 2 years waiting for the water level to come back up.
