2000 Pro Air Nautique- Tachometer Issue

I am currently looking at purchasing a 2000 pro air nautique and the private seller is not sure exactly how many hours are on the boat because of an issue with the tachometer. They said it was a common problem with the 2000 nautiques. Can anyone confirm that is possible or is a known issue with that year nautique?

Also- they estimate 200-300 hours on the original motor and have it listed at $17500

Any comments on whether that is a good deal?

    Thanks!

    2000 Teleflex guage problems

Do a search on Faria upgrade or look for Richard's posts. Yes the 1997 to 2001 gauges are prone to failure. Does the boat have Perfect Pass. That also has an hour meter. The motors go 2000-2400 hours before rebuilds if not used in Salt water. The price sounds fair.

I agree price sounds fair. You may try turning on the navigation lights causing the tachometer's face to become illuminated. That is the only way i was able to see my hours.

Hours are only one factor in determining the price of a used boat. The Teleflex gauges used on the 2000 to 2003 boats are known for becoming unreadable, and the engines do not store the running time, as far as I know. This is a very common problem. Correct Craft introduced the "digital" gauges in 2000, for no reason other than to change something, and (opinion in next statement) just like the current president promising "change" the change turned out not ot be a very good idea.

What is the condition of the upholstery?
What does the exterior of the boat look like?
Test drive the boat. What does the steering feel like?
Does the carpet feel significantly better under the seats, than in high traffic areas?
you can have a mechanic do a compression test on the engine, or even better a leakdown test.
Pull the dipstick, and look at the engine oil, do the same with the transmission fluid.
Ask about any service records. They probably will have the hours information on them.

All these things will give you a good clue on the age of the boat.

For what it is worth, my 1997 Ski Nautique has 2308 hours on it, and still is running very good.
