    SwimStep love

I just picked up a used composite step for my 03 and have been cleaning it up. It didn't really need much work, but I don't have anything else to tinker on. I powdercoated the trim black and I feel it looks real nice. I just hope it hold up over time. I also used some rubbing compound in attempt to get out some of the oxidation and minor scratches. The compound didn't do much more than a good clean. Any suggestions? It doesn't need to be perfect, but I think I could do better.

One more thing. I had to move the brackets and now have a few small exposed screw holes on the underside. I assume they will need to be patched so the step doesn't get waterlogged. Any suggestion on how to do this?

Ideally you would fill the holes with an epoxy and fiberglass paste, and sand that just below the surface, and then bring it level with gelcoat. You might get away with just using a gelcoat paste, but gelcoat shrinks a little after is cures, and that might open up some cracks in the repair.

      Here is one gelcoat supplier:

      Here is another:

I have gotten factory matched gelcoat from both companies, and been pleased with the products.

Thanks Dan. I'm not too worried what the underside patch job looks like, just want it to be waterproof. It looks like I will need to buy much more epoxy / fiberglass than I need.

just use some good 2 part epoxy to seal the holes. Note some of the 5 minute epoxy is not waterproof.

I would not worry about cosmetic issues on the underside of the gel, heck for that matter I probably wouldn't even worry about the holes.

Try this for sealing the holes, quick and easy, plus handy to have for any other mounting issues: http://www.shop3m.com/60410009470.html

This will remove swirls and small scratches and water spots. Takes some time and an electric orbital waxing machine, but will not damage finish: http://www.shop3m.com/60980032704.html

            Nice looking step!!
