Difference between ski nautique 196 and 196 SE

I am looking to buy a 2007 ski nautique 196.
A friend said that the boat i was interested in is not a 196 but a 196 SE.
According to him, this type of boat is shorter, but i cannot find any information on the Nautique site. The owner manuals do not mention the 196 SE.

Can someone explain the differences between the 2 types?

The SE is the Signature Edition - the lower-end package. It will not have keyless ignition, serial gauges, or other options that the Limited or Team edition have.

There is no difference in length.

The 196 comes in three trim levels.

SE - Base model with keyed ignition and rocker switches.

Limited - Mid spec with keyless ignition and touch switches, stereo, serial gauges.

Team - Level 2 stereo, composite platform etc.

All 196's are the same hull length.

The number actually refers to the length. 19 feet, 6 inches.

For what it is worth, the SE version is generally looked upon as a less desirable accessory package, but in my opinion, it is more reliable, and if a switch breaks, it can be fixed, with easily available parts.
Quite a few people have had problems with the key pads, and have not been able to use the boat, until the expensive, and available from only Correct Craft part arrives.

I am not sure if it matters for the 2007 (IIRC its plug-and-play), but for earlier years, 02-06, I have read that the SE edition is an easy convert to ZO with an ECM flash, but limited edition needs to be completely rewired and there is a lot of hardware to swap out which doubles the price of the conversion. I also think Daniel is right--less gizmos = less headaches as the boat ages.

The SE model also has a more basic gauge package. With the LE you'll get air/water temp, depth finder, plug and play heater/shower power inputs, interior lighting, stereo with in-dash controller, plug and play Perfect Pass from the Faria gateway, etc. I had an '06 SE, and upgraded to an '07 LE and enjoyed the additional creature features. DC is correct though, the SE switches and guages are cheaper to replace should something go bad.

A simple analogy: Think of the SE as a Tahoe, LE as a Denali, and Team as an Escalade.

Ignore the designation and look at what features the boat actually has. For example, does it have the 330 hp Excalibur engine? That was not standard on the SE, but most of them have it. I know quite a few people who bought SEs so that they would not have to fool with the electronic keypad, and them decked them out with many of the upgrades that were standard on the LE or Team boats.

But, as mentioned, the boat itself, the hull, deck, etc., is no different than any other 196 of that year.

Great point TX! I would highly recommend the Excal, and most SE's were ordered with them. The std. 5.0 is a strong motor, but not as desirable for resale.

Your friend rode the short bus. All 196's are the same length.
