2006 216 DD Wake Surf - Best Ballast configuration?????

    Hey All,
I've got a 2006 Air 216 DD and I haven't had a whole lot of luck getting a great surf wake out of the boat yet. I know people have surfed behind lesser boats without troubles.

Can anyone give me some info on a "great surf wake" ballast setup for this boat. I just want to get the most out of the boat that I have (without sinking it ) and I don't expect the wake to be anything like a v-drive.......just want to surf better behind this one.

    Thanks in advance.
    J.

With my Pro Air, also DD, I run a 550 sack along engine on surf side, 350 in ski locker, 440lb in rear locker as far on surf side as I can, and then the stock 200lb ballast filled on surf side. here is a pic, kinda hard to see the wake though, a little dark.

With the modified v hull it is necessary to create a complete lean to develop a pretty curl to your wave...proair133 is running a good weight set up but also don't forget to distribute your weight throughout the entire boat to get an even lean. Take advice from proair133 but also add the idea off throwing a 450lb surf side bow sac up front as well.

Also one other tip...I try to throw a couple of my crazy buddys hanging out over the water by the tower to create even more lean

i have played with weight in the bow, (300-550) and it really hurts the height of my wake. It does make it longer and a little more curl, and it is super easy to dump those nose if you dont have a really good driver. Not sure if the 216 would be any different. And I have had some buddies hang off the tower and stuff, it helps!

We surfed our 216 DD a couple times. You really have to be on top of your driving game. We did 600# on the rear seat, 600# behind the driver, 300# in the bow. Sometimes a person in the bow if we had one laying around. Play with the speed we found 11 MPH worked better then 10.5 or 10. Actually could tell the .5 mph difference. To me it is all about water volume. To much weight in the rear and the wave washes out or is soft. To much in the front, not big enough, but is longer.

How I got my weight right was I went out myself and moved the bags around. When I got the wake looking like I wanted, I put one person in the boat to drive so I could test it. When I put more people in the boat I just sat them on the bags in proportion.

I'm a pretty good drive, my wife is better. I wouldn't advise that kind of weight if you don't think you can drive it. Come to a complete stop, let the wave roll past before trying to turn around. Watch other boats wakes. turn opposit of the weight (if the WT is on the port turn starboard).

I've never hung off the tower, but I like safety, so I wouldn't do that in my boat.

Best surf wake I very had was in my 2000 Sport Nautique DD. Almost 4 feet, but the volume of water was awesome....

use waterbags, NOT LEAD, again NOT LEAD.....

One comment on this, I believe that you have to turn to the same direction as your ballast as the boat wants to list in the opposite direction of the turn. If you turn in the opposite direction of your ballast, you cause the loaded side to list even more. You are also pushing water opposite the turn and this creates an increase in the freeboard required. Essentially, the quote may have been a typo or I may have misunderstood, but don't turn opposit the side of the ballast.

Next question, (I think I can hijack my own post).......what is a good board with the smaller wake on the 216 and a rifer weighing in at about 195lbs (ME). I want to surf and have fun. Am looking at the 5'6" Ronix coal, the blue lake or a hyperlite landlock. Watcha think?

Oh ya.....I am going to use my 540lb bag and grab a couple of 350lb bags and play with the wake a bit.

Laker220 you cant go wrong with the blue lake, I dont know much about the koal or landlock...I would imagine though as you progress the landlock wouldnt b as much fun for you with it being such a long board
