Where to go in Houston

Where to go in and around Houston. I have been to Trinity and will continue to go, but the drive is a bit long to go often. I used to go to San Jac river, but they got strict on the launch and I cannot legally use it without the probability to be towed. I tried Lake Houston, but didnt like the launch, was way too steep.

Any one have ideas about a close place for quick outings which has a pay or public launch?
