Starter Solenoid and 40 amp rely - 1986 HELP!

    Hello all,

First im new to the site and a new nautique owner!! picked up my new to me 1986 ski nautique monday and i am excited about the resotre i plan to do.

Question though. I am having issues with power and the solenoid. I replaced the starter solenoid last night and the boat turned over fine and this time i could turn it off! the soleniod was stuck open and the starter would contenue to try to start the motor previously. that problem seems to be fixed.

now i have a weird power issue. i have no power from the motor to the ignition (or anything at the whell for that matter). I think it could be the 40 amp breaker next to the soleniod.

any one have these issues? i need help! great site by the way

You might want to post your question over on CorrectCraftFan.com. Lots more older boat guys over there with a lot of knowledge on maintaining them. A lot more 1986 owners over there for you to share info with.

It is possible and easy to check . See if you have the same voltage on both terminals of the breaker should be battery voltage. Is this a new problem since you replaced the relay? If so recheck the smaller wires at the relay you should be able to find a wiring diagram on CorrectCraftFan forum.

this is typical of a battery that doesn't supply enough current to the starter and welds the contacts of the relay together. You need to check the CCA rating of the starting battery if it is a deep cycle repalce it, but the battery needs to supply at lease 650 CCA's for the ford staters to work properly. The next step is to check the battery cables and their gauge 2 gauage wires don't cut the mustoard 0/1 0/2 cable does. I'll assume you all ready know to clean the ends so you have good contact.
