    Jeep Wrangler towing SAN 220

Has anyone done it? Capacity for Jeep is 3,500 lbs and dryweight of SAN is 4000. Has anyone towed this size boat with a jeep wrangler?

Don't even try it. The trailer is at least another 1,000 pounds or so. Add a tank of fuel, gear, etc. and there's another thousand, easily.

Jeff is correct. Besides....how will you steer with the front wheels off the ground?

I pull my 200 around the neighborhood, but I would never take it in the road. No way the wrangler would stop with that much weight behind it. It almost drags it in the water when launching even with the brakes locked. Your boat is even heavier.

I'll comment on this one in case you wanted more opinions. DON'T EVEN TRY IT. that jeep wouldn't be heavy enough to engage the trailer brakes in a hard stop. I have a 2006 Armada (full size) pulling my 210 and wish I had something heavier duty to pull with.
If you like PM me and I'll give you my number. I love to tell you a story about me, my ford explorer and a 25' Cobolt. Explorer rate to tow 6500# (v8) Boat 4800# give 1000# for trailer. Boat was empty. I was coming down a hill in Pittsburgh about 11PM at night (thank God) and the light was red about 1/2 mile ahead. started applying brakes, picked up speed, jammed brakes to try and get the trailer brakes engage, picked up more speed, blow through the red light at 50 MPH. Finally got stop, pulled over called my buddy to bring his full size truck over along with cleaning products (front seat), pants and underware.

This was back in 1999-2002 time before the heavier Nautique started coming out. After the above happened I NEVER towed anything heavier then a direct drive Sport Nautique with that Explorer.

At the end of the day - I was lucky I didn't get hurt or worse hurt someone else. I hate to say this, but with what your are thinking, you could really hurt someone on the highway.

            Wouldn't even think of it....

But then again, I am one of those guys that goes the overkill route with the F250 to pull a 230......

F250 on a fully loaded 230 is not overkill it is safe. I had a 236 I just sold and my f250 with a diesel was as small of tow vehicle as I would have wanted to pull it with. I have buddies that tow boats that big with half tons that are older and I wouldn't do it.. The newer half tons are probably fine.

Are you talking newer 07 ( JK )4 door wranglers? If so, towing a boat is not as bad as one used to think when hearing ski boat towing with a wrangler. The 4 door has a much longer wheelbase, which is the main issue on wranglers.

Still, towing a 220 behind even a 4door JK is too much for that jeep.

                    Jeep Wrangler towing SAN 220

We used to tow our SAN 220 with a 05 4-Runner w/ V8 and tow package rated at 7,200 # capacity. We trailered on several 300 mile trips through the PA mountains. It would pull it fine, stopping was never an issue but always was concerned about having to stop really fast in an emergency. Also, at the ramp you have to have everything lined up straight because once you start down, the boat/trailer pull you down the ramp with the brakes locked. Not a comfortable feeling.

We upgraded to a 08 Sequoia, now no problems.

Towing the boat with a Wrangler, not a good Idea. I have a 1997 Ski Nautique, and tow it with a Ford Aerostar, but I used to show horses, and with a horse trailer you learn to think ahead. Way ahead.

Here is a tip when backing a boat down the boat ramp. If you have an automatic transmission, put it in D, while backing down the ramp. No sense being in reverse going down the ramp, with the idling engine trying to make you go down the ramp faster.
It is common for a lot of vehicles to have difficulty stopping, backing down a boat ramp, because the normal brake bias is to apply about 70% of the stopping force on the front wheels, that when backing down a ramp, do not have much weight on them. So the front wheels lock up.

^^^ That sounds awful for the transmisson.

JK or TJ, I would not tow a boat that size with either. This is coming from a Jeep owner.

I have 4 door Jeep 2WD with automatic transmission. I pull a 176 with no problem but then again it only weighs 2500 pounds. I couldn't imagine pulling a larger boat and wouldn't suggest it either.

I tow about 1.5 miles to the boat launch and THATS IT! I would never want to leave town while towing the 210 with the jeep. The only reason I tow with it is just because its convenient. Just recently I lifted it and put 35's on ( havnt re-geared it yet) and all of that made it worse to tow with. But for the short tow to the launch...it works
