    China Big River no way....

Ok on a 30 day trip to China and missing my boat. The Huang Pu River is flat as glass at times and what a view. I just can't see getting in the water though.......

Water craft using the river is mainly barges and dinner ferry boats with an occasional cruise liner.

    Just thought I'd share...

It would be fun to have that water tested by a lab. I've been there and in some areas it looks like regular old brown river water....and glassy as you say.

But I stopped at an overlook on the "inside" of one of the big bends. I think it would be called a point bar. The tide was out and the bottom was showing out about 50 feet. It was nasty dredge material and littered with dead fish and other $*#&*. Stunk like I can't describe.

The amazing part is the land on the ocean side of the river was all alluvial flood plain or whatever a scientist would call it. Then they decided to barge or pump in dredge material to raise the soil level high enough to build an entire city. They did all that plus build the city in less than 20 years. Amazing.

I'll "dredge" through my pics and see what I can find.

Keep us posted on your trip.

Just be glad your boat isn't there to increase any temptation. Yuk...

You aren't even supposed to brush your teeth with the tap water in Beijing.

          Those are great pics!

And all this time I felt weird about wakeboarding in the Willamette River in Portland. The Willamette has nothing on all the stuff you might expect to have in there. BPA, sewage, etc...

Ok found a better lake(HangZhou) but not a ski boat in sight. Huge market opportunity here for a wakeboard lesson boat.

Just a quick google on Huang Pu water quality....

                  Case Study II* - Shanghai Huangpu River, China (1997) {http://www.who.int/water_sanitation_health/resourcesquality/wpccasestudy2.pdf}

                  * This case study was prepared by Chonghua Zhang - 1997

                  II.1 Introduction
The Huangpu River flows through the heart of Shanghai (Figure II.1). It supplies water to
the 13 million people in the metropolis and is also important for navigation, fishery,
                  tourism and receiving wastewater.
Around the mid-1980s, about 70 per cent of the 5.5 × 106 m3 of industrial wastewater and
domestic sewage, mostly untreated or partially treated, was being discharged directly, or
through urban sewers, to the Huangpu River and its branches. As the result, the
Huangpu River became very seriously polluted. The urban section of the Huangpu River
turned black and anoxic for about 100 days in the early 1980s and this increased to
more than 200 days in the 1990s.
Since 1979, the Shanghai Municipal Government has given much attention to the
integrated pollution control of the Huangpu River. In the late 1970s to the early 1980s,
environmental legislation and standards were stipulated for ambient water quality and
effluent, and institutions for enforcement were created. In 1982, an overall survey of
pollution sources, ambient water quality and hydrology of the major water bodies was
carried out. In the mid-1980s, the Huangpu River pollution control plan was drawn up,
following which financial resources were pooled, locally and from abroad, for major
investment projects, particularly for the development of an infrastructure for the new
water supply intake and for wastewater pollution control. Progress in this plan is
                  described below.
                  Peace..

                    Interesting.

I went back through my photos and didn't take pics of the mushy black point bar with the dead fish.

But here are two nice pics of Starbucks and McD.

That is absolutely brilliant. There is no way in *$(*#% to something like that off in the US.

When I was in Beijing, I refused my friends demands to eat at McD, KFC, and all the other "American" feed lots. They thought i would love it. Finally, on the way to the airport, I relented and went to a Pizza hut with them. I already hate all those places here, but they just cannot even come close to duplicating them there. I far prefer to eat actual local cuisine when I do travel. Not some mocked up fast food crap.

That market video is crazy. My wife and I went to a wet market in Siem Reap, Cambodia a few years ago. No train running through it, but yee gads. They do things differently on that side of the ocean for sure.
