    GT40 hours

First off, really appreciate this site and everyone here. Great source of info. Nautiques have always been a family thing. Started with a 73 ski nautique bought new by my grandfather that I eventually learned to ski behind. That 73 still hits the water at least once a week. We've been through a few others over the years but now I'm on the hunt for one of my own.

So with the back story out of the way... the question. GT40 hours, now obviously a well maintained engine should run till it's probably pushing 2k or more. Driving for a wakeboard school in Austin I put a fair share on a GT40 that was eventually sold with 1500 on it. But, when buying used, when do hours start to really affect cost as well as start to generate some concern for extra repairs in the near future.

I think it really has to do more with care and maintenance than hours. I've seen some really low hour boats that haven't been maintained and look like crap. My boat has 1100 hours on it and looks and runs great. Original engine/trans. Just make sure you look over the boat very carefully, water test it, put it through its paces, etc. You'll know if it has been taken care of or not.

If they will let you, recommend checking the impeller, oil, v-drive fluid etc. If any of those are in disrepair, old etc. it is likely that the internal components of the engine have not been cared for as well

Maintenance and history is key. 2,500 is what I recalled the published life before rebuild number to be. I think anything under 50 hours per year is light use. But whether normal, heavy, or light, I'd like to see something that indicates regular use.

I bought my 98 with a GT-40 with 190 hours on it in 2007. Extremely light, but dealer serviced with hours written on the receipts indicating regularly extremely light use. Second owner said brief early morning ski runs.

I'm also a good fan of talking to the owner a lot. By doing this, sometimes, you can get a feel for how a person treats his toys.

            I've got 2 gt-40's.

            #1 - 1999 Nautique, GT-40, 1050 hours
            #2 - 1998 Nautique, GT-40, 3600 hours

When driving them, I can't tell the difference. I drove a 2000 with 120 hours on it.. still drove the same. At the end of the day, I'll drive them until they fall apart. Throw a few thousand at them and have them rebuilt. All this dwelling on engine hours makes me roll my eyes. It reminds me of a truck I bought. This guy was selling a 2006 powerstroke for a very very low price. I went out to look at it and when I asked him why he was selling, he said the engine had too many miles. I looked at the mileage.... 102,000. Needless to say, I bought the truck. I've since put another 120k on it, and it looks and runs as new as it did when I first bought it. Just because an engine has been run, doesn't mean it's used up.

If this helps, I am the mechanic at Ron's Marine out here in central Calif.

we currently have about 8 SN's that are owned by a couple summer camps..

They range from 1996-2000, (All GT40's)

I show my customers pictures of these boats when they ask how long a nautique lasts.

all of them range from 3500-4400 hours and they are all on original engines, and only one has had a new transmission. What blows my mind is the fact that the kids that drive these boats, (summer camp workers) drive these things hard and beat them up pretty good. It proves my theory that with the right maintenence (serv twice a summer, imp and all) a nautique will last you as long as you need it to.

When they come in for de-winterizations, i can post hour meter pics.
