Extended Warranty on Engine ?

Has this question been asked before ? If yes, forgive the duplicate post.

I was just wondering if purchasing an extended Warranty is worth the $$$ ?

I am taking delivery of a ’05 Team 226 with ZR6 by end of March. One of the
Decisions that I still need to make is the extended warranty for additional 3 years. Its another $1500.00 for 3 yrs of coverage. If not purchased upfront, the warranty offer goes up by another $300+. (Yes, Sales Tactic)

I have zero experience with PCM engines and not sure how reliable they are. I hear that they are almost indestructible, at the same time – you never know, anything can happen.

I know the costs for repair, both labor and parts can be astronomical and that is really what I’m trying to avoid.

What is the consensus of PCM users here ? For new boat owners, was this extended warranty considered during purchase ? how much $$ ? Is the warranty worth the extra $$$ ? What are the chances of problems happening on PCM engine after the first 3 years ?

If you considering this first thing to find out is the warranty being offered by the engine manufacture or a third party? If it is by the manufacture and the claims get filed with manufacture generally the coverage is better. Most Extended warrantys have a deductable you pay at each occurance. Most warrantys have an items not covered list, see this before you sign anything. Most importantly no warranty covers maintenance items especially impellers. Change this annually to be safe. With that said inboards in general if maintained have a very good reliablity.

I think you'll find that PCM engines are among the most reliable marine engines that you can buy. The two that I have owned have been great. The only problem I ever had with my '94 was a bad starter relay ($15). I did have to replace the starter on my Super Air under warranty, but I believe even problems like that, which I consider to be fairly minor, to be the exception rather than the rule with these engines. Personally, I probably would not go for the extra warranty. I have faith in these engines.

I have never heard of any extended warranty. I did not even know you needed one. I have had many Nautiques and Never had any engine problems. Current boat is SV-211.

my nautique dealer talked discouraged me from the extended warranty...said the engine was very reliable and not needed (props to m2o marine for honesty !!!)

The last thing you are going have problems with is your motor. They are just about bullet proof. Chances are the warranty company will get the better end of the deal on any warranty on a PCM motor.

I have a 1982 SN. Sure I've had to replace some parts over the years, but there was never anything big needed ($$$). Also, most of the repairs probably occured between 10 - 20 years of age, not 3 - 6. I would think that $1500 would buy a fair amount of repairs and would opt NOT to buy the extended warranty.
