    Towing a 2011 sport 226

Website has it listed at 4700 dry. I am figuring 6000 with trailer, gas, toys. I have a 2011 silverado 1500 crew 4x2 with 5.3 and tow package 6 speed 3.42 gears rated for up to 9600 lbs. Do you think the boat will be too much to handle? Should I step back down to San 210? I am comfortable towing, just making sure the truck is.

i tow my 230 with a 5.3L crew cab z71 4x4. it isn't a diesel, but it gets the job done. i tow mostly local and a few 300 mile trips each year. i just watch the transmission temp on those trips and take it easy up hills. i would definitely recommend having a transmission cooler if you don't have one, but i think the towing package comes with it.

WOW I'm surprised that with 3.42 gears it is still rated to tow 9000 LBS. That said should be OK. I might have a tranny temp guage put it. I have one and like being able to monitor.

I've pulled 226's, 230s, and even 27' and 29' Formulas frequently with my 2009 Silverado 4x2 Z71 with the 5.3. That truck is MORE than adequate.

Not much difference, but I bet your towed-weight is probably more like 6500-6700lbs. For a large trailer like yours, figure 1300-1400lbs...then add at least 500lbs for gas and gear.

I'm guessing you're fine with a 9600lb rating, but tow ratings are usually unrealistic. They become standardized in 2013...finally (AFAIK, Toyota is the only manufacturer that has adopted the guidelines early and it dropped tow ratings 20-30% on the Tundra and Sequoia).

To check your actual towing capacity, take your GCWR and subtract the weight of your truck including gear and passengers. Your tow capacity is the lesser of this difference and the stated tow rating (assuming you're not exceeding your axle weight ratings with high tongue weight).

For truck weight, you can weigh at a local public scale or get a decent estimate by using curb weight plus the weight of your family plus fuel / gear / any heavy options that you don't think are included in the curb weight.

Manufacturers often develop tow ratings by the same method (GCWR minus truck weight), but they use a base/stripped-truck with only the driver and minimum fuel...that way they get the highest possible tow rating for marketing purposes. If I don't know the weight of the truck, I'll estimate the real tow capacity by taking the brochure-tow-rating and subtracting 1000-1500lbs depending on the truck.

The new 6 speed tranny took the place of the older 4 speed with 3.73 gears. it is z71 and came with both trans temp and trans cooler. Next step up would be the 6.2L engine with max tow package.

I am still very surprised at how much the boat weighs. 4700 is heavy for a 22 1/2 foot boat.

Bama..I'm hearing you on that weight. This is a heavy boat. I believe a 210 is only 3900 dry....so add one foot and a thousand pounds??? That being said.....there is alot of fiberglass work Inside the interior that adds to the weight. The way they did all the under seat storage, the trash can area, the fiberglass wind deflector, 50+ gallons of gas, etc....all add to the weight. But, on the positive, the extra weight help the ride out, and it is still a pretty nimble boat. Your truck should be no problem pulling it. Once it's rolling you won't even feel it....it's stopping you have to worry about....lol

This is interesting since I am looking for a new tow vehicle and last week ran into some inconsistent information on tow ratings for Toyota -- one vehicle I am looking at is the 2011 Sequoia and according to http://www.toyota.com/sequoia/specs.html its tow rating is 7,000 lbs. When I pointed this out to the sales manager, he showed me an April spec sheet that showed 8,800 lbs. (My guess is that the web site shows the new standardized ratings)

Towed a 216, 226, 230, and MC X star this week with my 09 Silverado Z41 4x2 with the 5.3. 90 miles round trip from the dealer to the boat show with each. Averaged 13.4 mpg towing. Not an issue one.

13.4 mpg average towing? that sounds ridiculously high with a 5.3L. how fast were you driving? 50 mph? does the 2 wheel drive make that much difference. with 4x4 z71 i only average 8-10mpg towing my 230.

is a Z41 a towing package or something? I'm getting at best 10 pulling my 211 with an F150 4X4 with the 5.4 and 3:53 rearend.

I'm getting around 14.5 with intown driving WITHOUT the boat...

65mph for the most part. Unloaded, I average 16.5 in town. I've gotten as high as 18.9 on one trip at night where I cruised at 65 unloaded. The Fords were always gas hogs when towing. Up until this year. My father's new 2011 4x4 F150 with the 5.4 gets stupid good mileage. Better than my chevy by a long shot.

yeah ford fuel mileage stinks. thats why i parked my 03 f150 and barrowed my dads 4.8l 04 chevy 1500 and pulled my 28 foot enclosed trailer thats weighs 4950 then loaded it with my grandmothers belongings which was way overloaded and drove from north alabama to south west georgia. and had no problems, did notice the weight on hills but was cruising at 65 with no problem. which now i also have a 01 f-350 with a 7.3 for the boat and trailer. your boat should be no problem for that truck even on long trips.
