I think it is down low in the usual location for small block chevy's. That's where mine is. I'm thinking yours would be on the port side of the boat since your engine is in backwards.

Look for the red wire and follow it to the starter. Mine was behind some blower vent hoses.

Crad: In my DD 206, mine is well hidden as well.

All: This is not a dumb question by the way. I've seen several inboard outfitters that move the starter up high and bolt it directly into the bell housing for lack of better term.

Thats referred to as a top mount starter. I really am supprised that Nautiques has not specd out their motor packages on V-drives to include a top mount starter, or PCM only provide V-drive packages with top mount starters. Makes life easier for their customer! Hint!!

I agree. They should move the starter up. Would also help keep it out of moisture or water. I think Marina Power does this on their motors.

Keegan - if you haven't already done so, remove the plastic side panels it will make life easier as you get your head down there. I think once those panels are out you will have good access. Question, why are you replacing the starter? You will be the second person recently to replace a starter on a late model nautique..

Maybe it is a safety feature in the sense of enclosure fumes....rising up. The starter is clearly an arcing/sparking device. The rest of the claptrap up top is fairly sealed or intrinsically safe. Just thinkin'.

CRAD i was thinking about replacing the starter because a few times when i went to start the boat it just clicked and did not start.

i made a post here and i was told "replace the starter, that is your problem"

i cleaned the engine ground and it has not happened again as of yet. if it happens again i will replace the starter.

PCM offers motors as do most all the marinizer's with top mount starters. When I re-power center consoles and even some salt water direct drives I always utilize a top mount starter configuration. Marine top mount straters are ignition protected just like the bottom mount style.
V-drive boats in my experiance have alway's been more subjected to excess water in the bilge then direct drives. Bottom mount starters are the first to get wet so to speak and have a higher failure rate under those conditions then would a top mount.
