Update for those interested. Spent the last 10 days at Powell and the boat ran very well but seemed low on power. A little hesitation at hard acceleration but still able to pull me up slalom ok. Have been assuming, and was told by prior owner that it had the base 240 hp motor. The plastic flame arrestor cover that identifies it as a HO Pro Boss was missing so I figured he was correct. Started looking to upgrade to GT40 heads a few days ago, for needed power and started digging into what I had. After learning how to id GT40 heads, I found that my boat has them which means it is the 285 HP Pro Boss motor. Pro-Tec is still in place and working fine so I will leave it for now. The lack of power is because the secondary barrels are locked shut with corrosion so I spent the week using only the primary barrels. Surprisingly, I was able to do 39mph with the original 14x16 3 blade prop and a horrible carb. State of the carb is such that I just ordered a new one that will be here later this week.

Very happy I don't have to dump a bunch of money in for performance.

After you get the engine running well the next best thing you can do is get a new prop. ACME 3-blade or 4-blade. The 422 (4 blade) is very popular and will do wonders over your stock 3 blade.

I had a brand new OJ 13X16 4 blade that I just put on yesterday but haven't been out to see the difference. Will there be a huge difference between the ACME 422 and my OJ 4 blade? I think I bought the OJ in about 99 or so but it is perfect since it was only on the boat for a couple of months before I moved to Utah and had to drop to a 13X14 OJ 4 blade due to altitude.

My 98 Sport had the OJ 13X16 4 Blade on it standard. I also had a 422 Acme that I was running on my 89 SN2001 so I removed to test it on the Sport. My original intentions were to lower the RPM's required at 35-40mph and above. The 422 dropped around 100-150 rpm at 40 mph. The overall performance gain with the CNC Acme was not night and day. Like going from the original Federal 3 blade to the 422 was on the 89 SN2001. On my to do list is to run full performance comparison between the two props and also a Acme 470 that I have. I feel the OJ 4 blade is a reasonable prop for these boats.
