speedo's

i have a 2005 196 that does not use the paddlewheel for the speedo. is that uncommon. what year did they do away with the tubes and pickups and just use the paddle wheel for both pp and speedo?

so how does mine work. do the tubes go into the back of speedo. or do they do into a computer that sends signal the signal to the guage.
i reason i am asking is i was looking at the gps based nautique logic page and was interested in their system to get my guage and perfect pass to read the same. but if my speedo is getting signal directly from the tubes, it will not work.

I believe, but would want to verify, that there is a transducer to convert the vacuum put on the pickups to a digital signal.
