    Fuel Pump?

I think my fuel pump is going bad. 2 out of the last 4 trips I had to bump it with the handle of a screwdriver to get it to kick in and prime up. Anyone else had this happen? How hard is it to install one of these?

The low pressure 'lift' pump(beside FCC)?

I had this exact problem this year when I first dropped the boat in(2003 SAN 210). Stalling/running rough, then would start working when tapping the fuel pump. Replaced the pump with a new 'Carter' pump from my local autoparts store. They were identical and both rated for 4-8psi, just soldered on the old connector.

Hmmm. The boat is running great and I don't have any issues after it starts at the beginning of the session. The problem is when I first put the boat in. If it doesn't prime up I give it a little tap and it starts right up. You think it will eventually go out on me? Also if I buy the same one from white lake like I plan how hard of an install is this?

Hard to say if it's needed or not but it sounds like it's on its way out. It was the first time I put the boat in the water for the year/season. It ran great for 20minutes, then sputtered/stalled. After a few hours and finiding low fuel pressure, I tried tapping the pump and voila. The problem kept happening after 20-30minutes of use so I replaced it and have had no problems since.

If you buy the direct replacement part the install shouldn't be too bad. 3 nuts(hold the bolts under bracket when removing top 3 nuts) around the rubber insulators. 1 hose clamp for the supply line, and one fuel line fitting for the high pressure feed to FCC, and 1 2pn wire harness. 20-30mins for replacement?

          Hope this helps,

Yes, the part number is Carter P4070 roughly 75-80$ USD the only difference is color and the electrical connection which is easily adaptable with your old pump.

              Hope this helps,

Buyer beware on the Carter P4070 low pressure pump. This is not the same spec pump that PCM utilized on their Products. The pump utilized by PCM and sold thru PCM Dealers is a sealed unit and ignition protected. Even though the pump mentioned above is very similar in apperance it is not the correct pump for your marine application. Why not spend the extra $20-$30 for a piece of mind and know you have the correct product for the application in an enclosed motor space?

Very good point teamseal, the PCM pump is sealed. Most fuel pumps are ignition protected in the automotive world aswell but I could not find any documentation to state that. There is Marine grade Carter pumps for sale(GP4389). Not sure on prices but if you're ordering and have to wait for shipping, you might aswell get the PCM part.

In my case it was the only pump withing 500kms and would have ruined my vacation.

Here are some pictures of the inside of the low pressure fuel pump looks like. There is a screen that collects debris. You might be able to clean it.

Be extremely careful when working ton the fuel system. Gas leaks are no good.

Thanks everyone. Good info. Spoke wiyh the guys at white lake and they said i'm probably the victim of ethanol. They said that this is a growing common problem. Also said they have replaced countless pumps this year. Went ahead and ordered one for peace of mind.

White lake vilifies ethanol. It's easy to blame something you don't understand.

Ethanol is the cause of Sept 11 2001, the recession, Agassi's drug addiction, Schwarzenegger's infidelity, the NFL Lockout, the cancellation of Friday Night Lights, tornadoes, dog fighting, spousal abuse, and computer crashes. LOL
