I current have a 06' 211 and am looking to upgrade. I was looking at the 220 or 230 preowned. My only concern is I have heard the wakes are very tempermental. I have young boys and want to make sure I can get a clean wake. I normally don't add additional ballast outside the factory. Any thoughts on what boat and which one has a cleaner wake at 17-21mph

The jump from a 211 to a 220 or 230 is pretty significant as far as the wakes. Both hulls are very similar (220 and 230), but the additional foot in length on the 230 reduces the "tempermental" condition you mentioned. The 210 is a very rampy wake and not nearly as touchy (hull doesn't carry the V all the way to the back). But if your looking for steeper wakes that could possibly take the kids to the next level, than the 230 is the way to go. As you add more weight to the 230, the less "tempermental" it gets.

On my 2011 230 stock stock ballast is not a problem, we just make sure to have the driver's weight offset. The 220's I have ridden seemed to be more sensitive to side to side weight.
It's when you start getting into adding a bunch of ballast over stock that there can be more trouble dialing it in (most people add the weight but don't speed the boat up enough when they add it). Rope length is an issue that can be overlooked when adding weight too. I will usually ride at 23.7 mph on my warm up run with stock ballast and closer to 25 mph when loaded with an extra 2400 lbs on top of stock (depends on how many people in the boat).Current Nautique: 2013 G23

So would you say don't spend money on a 220. The extra money it cost to for the same year 230 is worth it. I can upgrade to a 220 with little money. Thoughts?
My biggest motive is space for more people my boys always bring friends and I always have at least 8 people and it's tight in my 211.

Do a quick search for 220 on here. People either love it or hate it. The interior is very segmented with the bulkheads (for trash can, etc.) in the center of the cabin. With our group, it is hard to deal with if there are more than a few people out. I bet you can probably find some decent deals of people getting rid of them though.
Try to go out in one for a test. You may be one of the folks that love it.
I've had 210s and now a 230, I would go for a newer 210 before I would go with a 220. 210 wake is pretty easy to dial in and the cabin is wide open. But I sure do love the space in my 230.Current Nautique: 2013 G23
