chatter in steering wheel while pulling out

can someone help with this or point me in the right direction. i never had the problem before, but this summer after replacing the helm and steering cable i now have and only sometimes a chatter in steering wheel when pulling out. i can only duplitcate it when i pull out and steering wheel is still to the right and trying to center itself. everything is tight, checked several times. i have no prop or rudder damage or vibration at any speed.

Chances are that you do have some prop damage. You might not be able to see it, but there is a very good chance that's the cause.

+ 1 With Jeff you have a prop blade that has a slight bend take it to a prop shop and have it checked.

Not sure what boat you have but we have an occaisional chatter on our 2010- 230 on acceleration - i think it may depend on how rudder is turned at the start
- but mainly at full throttle

When visiting the Nautique factory I was told there are aware of the problem and there is a fix that the dealer can do to secure the steering cable (we have not had it done yet however)

under the rubber boot on the helm is an allen bolt, be sure this is tight, there is a nylon lock nut tha is held in wiwth a reset.

checked the helm and hardware, it is fine. it has to do with the position of the rudder at start. my prop is perfect. boatbuddy described it perfect, it is a chatter on acceleration only when the rudder is on the rt side of straight starting out. only does it when pulling someone up also and not every time. i seem to have some play up and down on my tilt wheel assy. , could this be it.

Could this be a lubrication issue? Does your rudder have a grease fitting? When the boat is out of the water does the cable and rudder move freely? I am just wondering that when the rudder or steering system is under a load (acceleration) if it is binding and releasing rapidly to create the vibration condition you feel. Could something also be to tight in the steering system and therefore causing a rapid bind and release condition when the wheel is trying to center itself? I will check to see if on right side as well - I have been trying to give a little gas to make sure rudder straight and then accelerate - this seems to eliminate problem but I will try to confirm next time I am out

The high speed rattle I believe is unrelated to this problem - apparently there is a fix which from what I understand is a simple brace to stop the cable from rattling at high speed - just need to get the Dealer to do it! - lots of empty promises

i can move rudder by hand. it moves the steering wheel easy

As the blades of the prop turn they each send a pulse of water back toward the rudder.When all is well the speed of each pulse is the same. If one blade is off slightly that pulse is faster or slower when it hits the rudder it will have more or less thrust slightly moving the rudder causing steering wheel vibration.
