Could Correct Craft become the next Harley Davidson?

This may seem like a strange question but let me explain:

I saw a presentation today from the guy who ran the Marketing arm of Harley Davidson during their turnaround from bankruptcy and bad image to huge success with incredible brand loyalty. A big part of Harley Davidson's come back was in their outreach to the biker community and subsequently to more of the mainstream consumer by changing their retail dealerships AND in building/sponsoring local Harley Davidson Clubs. Harley Davidson figured out that buying an expensive motorcycle wasn't a rational decision but an emotional one. They figured out it was about more than quality, features and benefits, being American built, etc.... It was also about making the consumer passionate about the culture and lifestyle that the motorcycle represented. They differentiated themselves from their competion by becoming the brand of motorcycle to own.

Now Correct Craft is a very different kind of company than Harley Davidson (some would say an opposite). But their consumer (us) is similar in many ways to the bike customer. We are passionate about the lifestyle our Correct Craft represents and IMO we are a very brand loyal bunch. I believe that if Correct Craft took a more aggressive approach at getting their boats and the people who make them, out in front of the boat buying public they could pick up huge market share. If they brought back NOA in the right way it could be hugely successful for them. They have all the ingredients (quality, values, retailers) to dominate the marketplace but IMO they aren't trying very hard. Think about the marketing power this site and the users on it have on the boat buying public! How many boat buying decisions have you influenced? I'm sure a few.

The famous Harley Davidson quote is "I'd rather see my sister in a wh0re house than my brother riding a Honda" Imagine Correct Craft as the Harley Davidson of the boating industry and apply your own slogan....

    Your thoughts?

I think this has some validity here. My guess is that Correct Craft is very focused on getting the factory up and running right now. I am hoping for huge changes once they are in there and up and running. They are an incredible company. Check out this video I found the other night

Was getting their Nautique a dream come true to anyone but me???

And ironically, the first words that my dad said about getting a Nautique seriously were when we were walking out of the Sea-Doo dealer!

I agree SN - it seems that no matter how boats are made by Nautique or can be made, the slots get filled with buyers - quality buyers who are pretty darn loyal. And let's face it, buying a $40-50K toy to use 3-6 months a year is not the most frugal decision - like buying a Harley. So, yes, we are similar to Harley buyers - but the question was is CC like Harley? Obviously, CC is a business like Harley and must run as a business. However, CC is not a publically traded company, so producing dividends for stockholders is not quite as important to CC. CC must be interested in the bottom line to stay in business as long as they have and to get the price they command. However, CC seems to me to be small enough to be personal, yet large enough to compete strongly in a ever changing market.

I believe CC is one of a dying breed. I think they sell exactly how many boats they can produce at very high level of quality at the risk of lossing market share. I am confident the numbers will rise as CC's ability to produce the same quality at higher numbers increases. But hear I go again, another loyal customer preaching to the chior. CC is not a sell out - not to say that Harley is. But, many others are - especially in the boating world.

What I want to know, is where do people get the money to afford a $40K motorcycle or boat? Not everyone has a stash of money to pay cash and very few trully have the room in there monthly budget to finance such an extravagant toy. That's a lot of money to chunk out for a toy. Sometimes I wonder what I am doing with one(*Y&^*%@!@? Are we nuts?

                  Air211,
It is called a 15 year loan at a low interest rate! That is where the money comes. Someone once told me, if you have credit, you can get almost anything financed!

Actually, when I bought my first boat in 1989 I found out quickly all my other toys sat in the garage most the time.. so I sold them.. never looked back, never regretted it1 And Now I have a Nautique to refresh my memory on why I have a boat!

My grandfather always told me "if you can't pay cash for it, you can't afford it". When it comes to boats, motorcycles, and other big toys I agree with gramps.

Not to put anyone else down for their comfort zones - I am just a wuss when it comes to finacial risks.

I am glad to own my Nauti though - I just never dreamed I would and I still wonder sometimes if I should have put the money elsewhere. I guess I justify it by saying "my Kids will only be this age once" and I want them to have all the stuff I did not have the privilege to have. I also want them to want to stick around as they grow older.

Sorry to turn so soft on you guys, I'll quit now.

I guess one could say "we are all in the same boat" when it comes to wondering weather or not we should invest in the finer thingsa in life!

                          How about this:

"I would rather own a Nautique than retire early, pay off my house, or send my kids to college."

                          or

"I would rather own a Nautique and go to prison for tax evasion than own a ___?__ and pay the IRS."

I got a 2001 in 1982 and wanted a new boat every year since 1989 or so. But held off due to lack of anything really new until my son needed a tower. So now I have a 1982 SN and a 2004 216.

But we're getting off the topic...I think CC is more like Ferrari than Harley.

Small, elite, exclusive, innovative, expensive, long history, customer loyalty, strong pre-owned market, hand made, stylish, financial spikes and valleys, sells everything they make.

I think CC falls flat on their marketing too and agree that this forum can be a potential gold mine for them. But like Ferrari once said, "We will build one less than we can sell". Fact is, they made a lot less than they could sell. But CC sells all the boats they can make. We'll see what happens after the new plant is up and running.

Didn't CC market to the other extreme sports a couple of years ago? Like ATV and motorcross? How many of you guys are into those sports? Not me.

                              couple things along this thread:

                              1. - Tough to compare CC with Harley. Harley was in big trouble and had to make some big changes. The big problems were image and craftsmanship. Harley had a "bad" image (biker gang type stuff) and they made some really crappy products. I remember my uncle talking about needing a trailer to haul around the tools required to keep his motorcycle running. So, these items can't compare to CC. They make an excellent product and I think that have an outstanding image. And their image has nothing to do with their marketing or lack of marketing.
Seems to me that the best marketing for CC is to keep making good boats. And "WE" will be the ones that sell their product to others. I know that the reason, that I bought a CC, was because of a die-hard, long-time CC owner and his passion for the sport and for CC.

                              2. Purchasing a boat is a luxury....but as with all luxuries, it comes with other things being sacraficed. My family spend most of our free time, during the summer, in our boat. (almost 200 hrs last summer) We also take lots of friends out on the water. I also use my boat primarily as a tool for a High school and Junior High ministry at our church.
But, we don't take a lot a vacations without the boat. I guess my point is that, it becomes a lifestyle.....and if you use a boat, it's worth every penny. If you buy a boat and use it twice a summer....then IMO that's crazy.... And besides, I find that the boat payment is the cheapest item related to owning a boat.....
