96 ski nautique leaking like crazy

    New member here.

I just purchased a 96 Ski Nautique 176 a week ago. Love the boat but it is pouring water on my legs comong out from the radio opening and coming out from under the throttle lever. I dont know where the water is coming from. Its not steady pour, just runs out when turning, accelerating, etc

Any ideas where its coming from?

Are your speedos working? First pull the dash and make sure it is not coming up through a disconnected speedo tube. There should be 4 finger nuts to loosen to lift the dash up.

That is going to be it than. Water is being forced throught the pitot tube that is supposed to go to the right speedo. Instead it is goin gon the radio and on you apparently. Take the dash off and reconnect the tube after blowing it out.

If you get in a time pinch before you use the boat again, you can also plug the line with a golf tee.

What lake are you on in Spartanburg? I am on Moss Lake in Shelby, NC.

If this turns out to be it I owe you! Heck im going out there now to check it out! The more I think about it. There are two pickups behind the boat with some plastic/runner tubing going to them. Im assuming speedo pickups? One for each speedo? Well the right pickup was not hooked up. The tubing was pulled off the pickup so I hooked it back up to see if the speedo on the right would start working. It didnt fix it. Now when I test drove the boat for nearly an hour before buying it, there was no water running out under dash. Maybe because the tube was off in the back? When I connected it back maybe I caused the water to comeback up in behind the dash?

Maybe the previous owner had it unhooked for a reason.

Yes, there is a speedo pickup on each side of the transom. There is a little tube that comes out from the transom and connects from the pickup. Once it passes through the transom, to goes to the dash and connects to the back of the speedometer.

If you do hook it back up under the dash, make sure to blow it out. You want to get any of the crud out of there.

                  Radio worked yes.

Jamie, I go to lake bowen.

Whats the reason for 2 speedo's anyway? Just for more visibility?

In case one fails while boat is in use, there is a backup at all times.

I used to ski on bowen from time to time when I worked in Spartanburg a few years ago.

And also to prove both gauges? ...if both read the same they are probably working properly? ....different means one needs work?
