Clarion Cmd5 remote problem - who knows what this is

Purchased my 08 sv211 about a month ago. Have a problem with the radio remote only working about 5 percent of the time. Display works just no controls. I found that there is a Y connector between the radio and the remote extension cable with a big resistor of some sort plugged into the other port on the Y connector. If I unplug this piece the remote works great. Can anyone tell me what this is and what it does?

That is a reciever for a wireless remote. Just like the one alpine uses. There is an aftermarket remote I have seen on here referenced, looks just like the Alpine. If you don't have the wireless, toss it in a drawer.
