    Jeep tow vehicle

Hi All, I am thinking about upgrading my tow vehicle and am considering a new Jeep Grand Cherokee auto with a 6 cyl turbo diesel. They have not been released long here in Australia with the diesel but they have been out in the US for a while.*
I tow about 2300kg (5000 lb I think) and live about 100km from the river. I need to go up some pretty steep hills along the way.*

Does anyone use one, if so can you provide some feedback on towing with one?

Not a direct comparison but here in the UK I have a 2002 GC with the 5 cyl 2.7CRD engine. Tows fine on road and pulls the Nautique in and out of the slipway with no drama. The new GC has more BHP and torque although I haven't seen one yet.

Couldn't find info on the diesel when I went to see for myself at Jeep's web site, but this has info on the gas powered 5.7 liter v8 http://www.jeep.com/en/2011/grand_ch...bility/towing/

get the tow ratings from your jeep dealer and also get the torque and hp curves so you can compare (and ask for any comments here, too)

I have a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 4X4 with the 5.7L V8. Tows with no issues. The V8 also includes larger brakes than the V6.

I have a friend withthat jeep setup, he tows a 21ft center console, outboard, on a tandem axle trailer. his boat and trailer weigh about the same as mine. It pulls, stops, and controls the boat just fine. The one thing he did do is add a set of the supplemental air bags as he felt the boat made the rear of the gc sag to much. Overall he is happy with the gc as his tow vehicle.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is not offered in the US with a diesel engine. They do produce with a 3.0L diesel engine but only for the export market. I was aware that it was going to Europe, first I heard about the diesel engine going to Australia.

The diesel engine is a new 3-liter V6 produced by VM Motori in Italy. The engine packs 241 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. However, I also heard they were offering a detuned version that should produce with 191 hp and 324 lb-ft of torque for some markets. Would need to see which would ended up in the Australia market. Fuel economy doesn’t sound so bad at 8.3 liters per 100 kilometers (28 miles per US Gallon). Sounds like a good engine to drive and tow with. I have not had the opportunity to drive. In the US gas is cheap so I go with the 5.7L Hemi.

jharris, if fuel was cheaper here I'd be looking to the 5.7L Hemi as well. The diesel that's in Aus is rated 177kw (241hp) @ 550nm (406 pound-feet) of torque. My local dealer is due to get one this week and I'm getting it for over the weekend for a test drive. It's interesting that the diesel is only released internationally.

              Thanks again for the responses.

I have a jeep commander with a 4.0 6 banger. It tows my 211 just fine. I actually towed it from Flordia to Michigan and that includes going over the Smokies... going through the Smoky Mountians there was some times where a bigger engine would have been nice.

I drive a 2006 Jeep Liberty diesel. It's a 2.8 liter Motori diesel, rated 190 HP and 335 lb.-ft. torque. Though Liberty's look smaller, they are not much lighter than a GC. I tow around 4,000 lbs. with it, handles it very well. I find it easier to tow with this, more steady power delivery, than some V8 gas engines I've towed with.

So, I think you'd be very happy towing 5,000 lbs. with the power ratings of that 3.0 diesel.
