    1986 Ski Nautique 2001 ?s

My buddy and I are strongly considering buying our first boat, and we have been looking at an '86 Nautique 2001. I have some ?s and concerns that I'm hoping some of yall can help me with...Just FYI I'm going to be a first time boat owner and am a rookie wakeboarder at best...

1.) what is the wake like behind an '86? I would definitely look into some fat sacs if necessary, but seating is already tight so I was curious what the wake was like without sacs. Remember I am a rookie wakeboarder so I don't need anything crazy, but enough to be fun and account for the fact that I am going to get better over time...

2.) anything in particular I should look out for? I've heard engine mounts and check the stringers (I believe they are wood in an 86??)...

3.) my buddy is worried about the fact that it is an '86 and the engine going to go out on us...while I hear his argument, my rebuttal is that you are a.) buying a quality boat that is made for pulling people, and b.) you take that risk with any engine really, especially when you are going to be driving it somewhat hard pulling people on wakeboards and what not

4.) We talked the guy into selling it to us for about $3k. He doesn't have it sitting on the side of the road and it is very hard to tell it is even for sale, and he is also an older man and doesn't use computers so I'm not sure he understands what exactly he has. Also the 1 owner before him was a professional skier, so I'm assuming it was well taken care of. He said he didn't take it out all that much, thus the reason he is selling it. He claims it has only 200 hrs, which I am very skeptical of, but he did say the odometer was working so I dunno. The interior is in good shape, no cracks, and we are taking it for a complete inspection, or at least a compression test, here within the next few days. I would also like to get it out on the water for a test run.

5.) He hasn't run it since earlier this year, and I'm worried that won't give us a true representation of the shape its on. Should we at least change the oil or anything like that? If we do buy it, we will for sure get a tune up done on it.

Any thoughts, questions, advice is greatly appreciated...

I have had my 86 SN since 1988 is has a larger than average wake naturally. As far as the engine goes our is the original engine with about 1000 hours on it. If you take care of the maintenance on the engine it will be fine. My recommendation would be to change out the points to an electronic ingition. This will save you a lot of trouble down the road.

had 4700 hours on my 87 2001. fantastic boat. Check stringers, tranny and compression. if all good than 3k is a fair deal.

Is it expensive/difficult to convert to electronic? and would it be worth just doing when we get the tune up done??

The wake on the 2001 is awesome! A friend of mine has one and I was really impressed the first time I rode behind it. Its sensitive side to side just like my SANTE but when its dialed in it has a really nice shape. He has a sac in the bow and replaced the rear seat with a Launch Pad Sofa.

My first Nautique was an 86. Loooooove that boat. Great wake. My tranny went at around 500 hrs, a tranny and a flex plate was about $1200 to replace. With that said, buying this boat for 3k is a streal I would think if you had to replace the tranny in a year or two its no big deal. If the outside of the engine is clean more than likely the inside is. My rule of thumb.

If it runs good and floor and stringers are OK: get it! $3k is a bargain then. I have an '85. Great little boat with a great wake! I often ride without any ballast and the wake is still very decent then. My engine was rebuilt around 1500 hours, now almost has 2000 and still runs perfectly.
