Thanks. I should have asked what you pay the state in unsecured property tax. I forgot boat tags our 20 or so a year. Its the property tax where they kill you.

I would have to check but I believe I was paying 120 for my 90 Sport when I sold it last year. I opted to register my 99 in AZ as an out of state resident as it is used primarily in AZ. They charge a flat rate based on length for out of staters. I now pay 151 but avoid pay the non secured CA property tax as well as sales tax. Trying to figure out at what point it makes sense to register it in CA.

Around $300/yr in tax for my '03. Goes down slightly every year.

Thanks for the figures guys. I am waiting for the NADA value to get to the point that the 1% property tax is cheaper then what AZ charges me.

Eric, the charge is 1% of the states perceived value of your boat. They do not go based on NADA. They have their own crazy depreciation (more realistically, lack of depreciation) they base it off. But if you bought your boat, per your Bill of Sale that you provided to the DMV, for, say, $20k, that is what they will base if off. I would imagine it will take more than 5-years to get below the range where it makes sense to register it in CA again. I know I appreciate paying $151 a year on my '08 230 that is registered in AZ. Prior to selling my '05 210, I think my last luxury tax from CA was in the neighborhood of $400 and that's when I decided I would start registering my boats in AZ. But my trailers have always been registered in CA because AZ has a fee for trailer tags.

The secured property tax in California is a complete joke. I already paid sales tax when I bought the boat, why in the **** do I need to pay a property tax.

You mean $259 a year for your 08 230. But still cheaper then CA tax.

Yes, I pay $259/year to register my '08 230. I figure I have another 15-years before it's below value to move the registration back to CA.
