    1991 sport nautique

Found one forsale, has 1100 hrs has a red PCM motor? Gel coat is faded and seats worn and cracked. What things should be checked out and if I could get it for 3500-4000 is that a decent price. Color is white, maroon, grey. Guy says stringers and floor boards are solid. Thanks for your help. I'm a nautique newb

it is very difficult to analyze this with out close pictures. You are probably talking about the red valve covers that PCM used at that time. Just because the "guy" says the stringers are good, is not a guarantee. That price sounds like a "get rid of it price", which could be good, or could be bad. At any rate, i'm sure others will chime in here...

I have a 91 Sport (got it 5 years ago) - it has been a great boat. You have an interesting find and a lot may depend on what you want to do with it and how mechanically inclined you are. Short of ripping up the floor (or maybe putting it on a scale to see if the boards/foam are soaked with water) I don't know of any way to really tell the condition of the stringers and floor boards. You can thoroughly press all parts of the floor to at least check for obvious rot and look very carefully at the engine mounts to make sure that they are solid. The engine has a good number of hours but could conceivably run for many, many more with standard maintenance - it all depends on how it was maintained, does it have good compression and can you take care of the basics (keeping the oil changed, good impeller so it doesn't overheat, basic storage, etc).

The gel coat and seat condition are cosmetic - gel coat can be buffed and seats recovered (at a widely varying price depending on how). The price is very good - does it run? Start easily? Decent throttle response? Good steering? Can you put it in the water and see how it performs?

All of this leading back to - what do you want to do with the boat? If you are comfortable that it is in decent condition and you're looking for a very good machine (way beyond any I/O) to do a some skiing and boarding, big enough for a few friends/kids/dog /etc at a good price and can do basic work yourself - I would say go for it. Buff out the gel coat and (if you want) have the seats recovered by someone local at a good price with skins that match well enough. Throw a Monster Tower and Bimini on top with a couple of racks to get the boards and tubes off of the floor. An adequate stereo of your tunes, load it up and have fun.

If you're looking for a Nautique to restore to original or one you want perfect in every way, this probably won't be the boat for you. The cost to bring it back to showroom standards (skins, gel coat, carpet, maybe engine, stringers, etc) will be way more than what it will be worth when you are done.

Let me know if you have any specific questions on the Sport Nautique and I'll try to answer them.
