    Question about hours

So I'm new to the used market. I purchased new the first time and ended up selling it to free up cash. This time around I'm shopping second hand but it is daunting which is why I went new the first time.

How many hours on a 2009 210 with a 409 upgrade is equiv to say a well look after land cruiser with 50k 100k and 150k kms (I'm an Aussie)

Hopefully I have explained the question well.

I guess a better question would be how many hours is getting too old? Or what range is safer, or perhaps what i should consider.

I generally wouldn't consider a used car with over 50000kms. I guess I'm trying to relate to this.

Most people put on about 50 hours a year . So an 09 should have about 150-200 hours with normal use . I have heard that 2000 hours is the life expectancy of a tow boat engine I dont know how accurate that is.

I'd agree with hunter that, with "normal" use, and '09 will be in the 200ish hour range. The 2,000 hour rebuild is likely still about correct, again for "normal" use. However, a well maintained motor will go well beyond the 2,000 hour range, with minimal problems. It's not uncommon to encounter 2 to 3,000 hour boats in the hardcore waterski community. My buddy just rebuilt his '93 Prostar motor after 3k hours.

About 2500 hours is time for a rebuild, not the the trash can. Between 50-150 hours a year is pretty standard.

In reference to the engine, I think the rule of thumb I heard is 100 hours = 10,000 miles, which would make 500 hours a 50k mile vehicle, but only just past the break in period on a Land Cruiser

id look at anything upto 200 hours in that year. but it would need to be the right price as its just come out of engine waranty. id rather spend a fraction more and get some factory waranty on the engine/gearbox/drivetrain. it seems silly to buy a boat that has just run out of engine warranty. if its a great deal then go for it!

I am definitely leaning towards new but just considering my options. I thought there was a 5 year warranty on the nauts?

I always get a kick out of 'hours' discussions. I have owned many new Nautiques. All of them start to run much better and more efficient once they reach 100 hours.

200 hours is NOTHING on these boats. If you want to do the math, let's say 34mph for 200 hours. That's equal to 6800 road miles. Even if you double that b/c of the RPM's, that still nothing. I don't think you can really double it because ski boats spend most of their life idling at each end of the course. 17 seconds at speed and 1-2 minutes idling at the end. Wakeboard boats don't do that as much, but they also don't usually go 34mph either.

A friend of mine had an old Ski Brendella with over 3,000 hours on it and it ran strong. Today's motors should last longer given proper care.

I'd say if it has too FEW hours, I'd be concerned. Was it maintained while it was sitting? Basically, I'd look at maintenance and condition of the boat way before the hours.

The boat has a Five year warranty ,the PCM engine has three year warranty.

He nailed it in my opinion.

I would aim for 100-300 hours. Less hours is not always better...

Remember, condition of the boat > hours.

Dave, that was sounding like a reasonable explanation then I realized that using that logic my boat is worn out. Its not unusual to foil for 45 mins to an hour with only 2 or 3 breaks to pick up the rider and we can do those hot if we feel like it.

Seriously though it's such a different stress from a vehicle that I don't think there is a good comparison. I've seen people rebuild motors with less than 500 hrs and know plenty that a running with over 2000 on the meter now.

If a motor was rebuilt at 500 hours, I suspect it was due to poor maintenance or a manufacturers issue. I know several ski schools that put over 800 hours a year. They are well maintained boats with no issues. They pull out most of the interior when they get them so no undue wear occurs.

I would say there may be some correlation between hours and condition of the boat (not always). If a boat has high hours, it could mean people are in and out of the boat with lots of wear and tear on the carpet, upholstery and gel coat. If those are fine, go with it!

I put apx 200 hours a year on mine and I think they are in 'better than new' condition when I sell them. They only thing I have not figured out is how to keep the carpet all fluffy.
