Replacing Super Sport Cleats to Pop-Up

Has anyone ever done this? I only have one cleat on each side in the middle of the boat.

I would like to replace them with this style if it would work

Thought about it on mine too.. but havent tried... only issue might by whats behind the current cleat, and if there is enough clearance. I bet the mount holes might even line up (if you are lucky)... also, the face plate of the popup cleat is pretty flat.. just make sure the are where the old cleat is, is also flat and not too curved... I know mine are below the side windshield above the rub rail... where it is curved... just make sure its flat. You will obviously have to drill more larger holes in the nice boat.. but those would look much better for sure!

Also, while I am on it.. if you are running a two piece rubrail, I just found a very inexpensive replacement for the insert, at the HOME DEPOT (Hardware/plumbing store)... Its called PEX tubing, it comes in BLUE, BLACK, WHITE and RED... I used the BLUE 5/8" tubing and it cost me $26 for 100ft... you only need 50 for the boat.. it slips right into the stock Outer rub rail... and looks awesome! It would look great on your blue SS.. as a trim.. or just the black... Nautique wants $150 for 50ft... I paid $13 for 50ft... ! [IMG][/IMG]

U better get some sunscreen on that Pex, it's not made to be exposed to UV light.

I understand it is not supposed to be used (as intended) in outdoor conditions due to risk of molecular change of the material eventually leading to possible rupture, but since there is no internal pressure associated with the rub rail (like there would be under normal use)... is there a problem other than that? Im not a plumbing expert...? would it fade? would it crack? I guess we shall see.... unless someone has this answer.. thanks for the warning!

Having a plumbing supply biz for the last 20 years I can tell you it will get as brittle as an egg shell in less then a year and discolor to a light brown quickly. The hundreds of rolls I have in stock now all have to be stored indoors for this reason.

Interesting, thank you for the professional info.. since its on there now.. I will run it until it does go south.. the boat is stored inside and only run on weekends for a few hours at a time.... if it gets ugly, I will pull it off and replace with the right stuff... haha, thought I found a reasonable alternative... it was only $13. not a big investment on a non-critical part. Thanks again.

Really put sun screen on it. UV blocker is a UV blocker skin or plastic. Bow to Stern is 120SPF.

OK two 7/8" holes needed for pop-up (attwood IE Nautiques) cleats.

opps, sorry I just clicked your link. I've installed the spring loaded ones too (the ones in your pick). On those you have to cut a hole, or slot, the same size as the cut-out in the backer plate. I was not the easiest install on those. Go with the pull up if you want a simple install.

                        Super_sport!

                        Thank You!

My rubrail has faded to an ugly blue as well! I was trying to think of a cheap alternative to buying that $150 rub rail from nautique as well! I will be going to get 50ft as well!

My boat always sits in doors or covered so I am not to concerned about the fading

Also, I am looking for some cleats that will line up to the 4 original screw holes and then i would probably have to drill a new hole for the pop up part

Just curious if anyone had tried this yet

I thought about doing that but I would like a black insert for a more updated look!

I tried to find the black PEX today at home depot in Canada but had no luck, I'll head over to michigan on the weekend to their home depot
