We got a small Italian Greyhound and the nice thing about this breed is that they basically don't shed, so no problems on the boat. They are not keen on water, so no jumping off the boat either. As long as there is sun, she will just find a spot on a seat and take a nap...pretty easy.

disclaimer: i didnt read the whole thread, so i dont know if my approach has been addressed. however, i have had [mini] dogs on my last 4 boats over the last 10 years, and they are heavy shedders.
1) if you have the option remove the carpet, do so...the boat stays way cleaner in all conditions and the floor is never wet and cold.
2) if #1 isnt an option, buy the widest roll(s) of duct tape you can. powerash the floor against the grain (the way the carpet wants to naturally lay), but dont get closer than 12" or you stand the chance of burning the carpet glue. wet vac the boat. let the boat completely dry. lay the duct tape out in strips lengthwise that cover the entire floor. walk around on it to force it to stick to all of the carpet fibers and pet hair. pull the tape up against the grain. if it is not overly soiled w/ dog hair, skip the power wash. the tape trick really only takes about 20-30 minutes for the entire boat.
as far as the diet is concerned, my GF is always going to choose the healthiest option over the least shedding option. in her opinion, if you are not prepared to have a lifetime with a best friend that may bark, shed, or have the occasional accident, then get a best friend that doesnt have four legs and a tail....Last edited by tdc_worm; 05-22-2012, 09:59 PM.

My best friends give me gas money and know how to use a Shamwow! Although I appreciate your advice, which is good, I cant do that every day. Im hoping this dog food works. However, my wife is a chiropractor and nutritionist and buys organic dog food, im not sure how shes gonna take the blue buffalo delvery. but compromise has to happen somewhere. Thanks for your input worm.

grey hounds are beautiful dogs. Not water fans though. I should trade her in for one of those!

blue buffalo is organic...we get it for the nutrition. I didn't know about the reduced shedding benefit. She scratched pretty bad when she first arrived so we went that way to fix the scratching. We use the Basic line, but I'd imagine they'd all work for you.
Another option would be Purina Proplan.

4 months ago we switched to Blue Buffalo from Nature's Recipe for our rat terrier. She has been on phenobarbital for the past 9 of her 10 years of life for epilepsy (seizures). Within a month of using the new food her seizures have gone from 3 to 4 a month down to 1 every few months and we our giving her a forth of her meds. Dog will be going out in the boat this weekend for the first time since she started eating Blue. I will see if I notice a difference with shedding.sigpic

interesting. we had the cat on pro plan but when we switched the dog we switched the cat too. Wife does all that research, so your rating on pro plan is enlightening to me.
great story Echo. Should share that with Blue Buffalo.

It's probably the best food you can buy at big box pet store. I shop at a small specialty pet food store personally because there are more options.

The only thing I dont like about having him along in the boat is the hair he leaves behind... Tique is super mellow and just chills out the whole time, so he doesnt pose a danger to the boat or gear in any way (vinyl included). He's not a typical 1yo lab.

Another thing about good food is your dog (or most dogs) will eat less of it, so the higher price is offset. Dogs are not natural grain eaters or we could just buy bails of hay.2008 210 SAN TE (Moonraker Yellow over Midnight Blue)
