My Official review of G23 wake!

This past weekend was our annual Spring 2 Summer in Guntersville, AL. Our boat sponsor for this year was Russell Marine and they managed to wrangle a G23 to pull the event with. If I heard correctly this was the same boat that pulled the MN Spring Ride the weekend before. Anyway on to the boat! I spent a good hour Friday getting in and looking at all the little in and outs of the boat. I really like some of the things they have done with it! My first impression when seeing it on the water was it doesn't look as big as I thought in pictures. It is a big boat with lots of freeboard though and I wish I would have thought to get a side by side comparison shot of it and my 2003 SANTE.

Being in the boat I did notice one thing that kinda got to me... The base of the tower is so large it makes a pretty big spot from which someone in the boat could not catch the dock or another boat if needed. I'm sure in time this could be gotten used too, but just something to think about. Another thing I noticed was the boat looked sluggish! When we first arrived there were already a few guys riding and I had no idea what engine it had, how much ballast they were running, or how the driver was powering up, but it took much longer than I would have thought to get on plane. Once getting in the boat and seeing it in fact had the 450 and they were running only stock ballast I was a bit disappointed it was not overloaded with ballast making it so slow. They were only running an ACME 1235 (14.5 x 14.25) prop and said they planned to swap out to a 15" prop for the event. It did look and feel stronger the rest of the weekend after swapping out props. They went to a 15 x 12, (I think it was a 2130 or 2310) I don't see it listed on the ACME site though. This boat could run a larger prop as well. There was still a good 4" clearance between the prop and hull with the 15" on. With the 1235 the engine RPMs were way high IMHO. We ran between 4200-4400 RPMs at 23-24MPH. I never got a chance to see what it ran with the new prop though.

On to the wake! It's huge!!! At first I thought it felt and rode like a current model 210 sacked out, just bigger. Later a friend said he thought it felt like a sacked out Malibu wake with a sacked out 210 wake on top of it. I think that is a better representation than mine. The wake felt mellow to me riding up the transition, but then just popped you straight up. The lip was clean even though I was in some choppy water. I usually ride at 82.5-85' behind my 2003 SANTE @ 24.5, but pulled into 80 @ 23.5-24 for the G23. I could have ridden longer I think, but didn't need to. All my tricks felt bigger and I had more time to slow down spins or really hold onto grabs. Unfortunately I only have 2 pics of the wake and none of the boat, but here you go...

When you say sluggish, do you mean that the engine was at MAX RPM and the boat was barely making plane? Do you know what the factory prop is?

I was told this thing should be able to do 50 MPH with the XS550 in it, so if it is already at 4400 RPM at 24 MPH that is not a good sign ...

The factory prop is going to be the 15"x12" from Acme. It was a bit sluggish at the MN Spring Ride, but as said above, it was only equiped with the Acme 1235...been told that the bigger prop makes a world of difference. We had factory ballast full with about 10 people in it, and it did "okay". I'm guessing that it will be much much better with the big one. Hopefully I can give you an update on the performance of the new prop soon....my personal boat should be here any day.

I don't know what max RPM is on that engine, but it was definitely spinning fast. It would make it on plane, but just took longer than what I thought it should. That's a whole lot of boat and weight for a 14.5" prop though. The 15 x 12 made a noticeable difference, but I think there will be more props offered as more testing is done. You could probably fit an 18" with no problem looking at the hull. I'm sure as more boats are released and prop companies get to test them we will see a bunch of prop options for this boat. There is NO WAY the 343 could move this boat with full ballast in an efficient manner IMHO.

a renowned prop company recently told me that manufacturers generally test the boat with oem ballast and approximately 3 people in the boat. this is where they choose their "do everything" prop size. that's probably pretty common knowledge i bet. would you say it was like planing off your 210 with 3k lbs in it and the 644 prop? do you know if any of the russell marina's will get to keep the boat? i'm going to the ridge in a week or so for some service work and would love to see a g23 in person.

It was like being in a 210 with 2000 lbs of ballast and a 644. We had 6 in the boat, factory ballast, and the rider out back. During the contest there were probably between 8-12 people with factory ballast. The new prop made it much quicker to get on plane.

It was not Russell Marine's boat. I didn't catch his last name, but it was a Nautique reps personal boat Sammy. He left for OK if I remember correctly. Doubt you will see one at Russell Marine.

The wake looks so sweet. This may be obvious but worth asking, was the boat stable side to side without the wake washing? Would one person sitting on the wrong size mess up the wake as with a 210?

Not real sure. They kept the boat pretty even the whole time. It did handle its own wake really well, like it was just a small boat wake passing under. I really would have liked to felt it in choppy water with waves from different directions.

I had a similar experience as core-rider. Got a chance to go out on the boat while it was in Atlanta. I believe it may have been the same boat that was being hauled all over the place (green and black with 450). It only came into town for like 2 days before heading off to the next event.

We had 15 adults in the boat and with ballast full, it would not get on plane. (Maybe it would have eventually have gotten there, but it would have been forever and a day). We had to dump some weight. Later in the evening, when we only had 6 adults on board, we could run full ballast and get on plane in a reasonable time frame.

We didn't get to ride long and the water was crap but the wake was HUGE and it was definitely hard as a rock at the top. As core-rider mentioned, a lot of upwards pop. Love the boat, don't love the price.

I would not consider this boat with anything less than the 450 if you are serious about loading it up. Before the test ride, I thought the 550 was ridiculous and only necessary for the extreme or someone who has HP envy. However, after the test ride, I would take it if price isn't an issue.

We didn't test this extensively, but the boat is way less sensitive to side to side wake than a 230. We definitely didn't have it balanced at time and the wake was still clean on both sides. You could see the rooster was off center, but the wake was still clean on both sides as low as 23mph and ballast full.

Speaking of rooster tails.... that thing was ridiculous until we got up on plane. I think the sun got a little wet every time we took off.

Just finished uploading a couple of vids from dealer meeting & a casual day out on the G23. The video looking aft was from dealer meeting and had 12 adult males in the boat & full ballast with a ZR450 spinning the new 15 x 12 prop. Looking forward video was with full ballast & 3 adults (2 males & one female) & 4 small kids (age 7-11) hiding from the rain, again it was with a ZR450 and a 15x12 prop. It might seem biased but it certainly handled the load onto plane & in turns better than our 230 at home that runs with approx 1900kgs and the 409hp. Will let you make your own minds up though.

Maybe it is just the mic on the phone .. but it sounded really loud in the cabin when it is powered up? Is it just the video that makes it seem that way?

I dont think it took that long to get on plane, about 10 seconds is what i got from the vid?

Probably the iphone pick up... they are not that great... it is quieter than the 230 or 210 we ride normally at home... The 450 does have a super throaty bottom end intake noise though, far more excessive than the 409
