I would use the kneeboard over stepping off a ski. The step off is a bit tricky. You have to push your foot on the water way forward and it feels a bit unnatural. It helps to learn with both feet first then pick up a foot and ride one footed before trying the step off.

I'll toss out another barefoot idea. Take an old ski and turn the bindings around. Leave the heel cup off. Get up on the ski and ride about 20 mph and pop up, turn and grab the handle with both hands. Now the ski is forward and you are backwards. The next step in the trick is a big one...

This post has me stoked. I'm going to pull the old kneeboard out this weekend, do a couple backrolls, unbuckle my knees and foot away. I'm not as flexible as I used to be so the hardest part will be the transfer from the knee to sitting position.

i read this and the answers on the ropes seem all over the place.

barefoot - non stretch - but quite a bit longer than wakeboard rope
wakeboard - non stretch - but the added length of barefoot rope is very nice.
ski - stretch - would definately avoid this.

        Generally correct others may clarify.

I think wake ropes though are getting longer as boat speed has increased. Although I'm not sure anyone is out at 100.

Some footing ropes are out at 90/100 to get clean water behind crappy boats. There is a reg on some of the footing competitions but I can't remember what it is....maybe 80' for figure 8, slalom, and freestyle? I don't know.

I generally think footers don't like removable segments in their ropes. But I'm sure everyone has different preferences.

i'm not a very strong footer, but for me there is no way i foot behind my boat without my 100 foot rope.

airtool, i forget which lakes you frequent, but i think i'm going to be out on cedar creek next month.

We used to visit Canyon twice/year up until two years ago when it was so low and my favorite ramp was closed for re-construction. We haven't been in a while but we love to go because of the water clarity, view, etc. We go there more to swim from the boat and "vacation". Friends don't understand why we go there when we have access to private glassy water.

Occasionally we visit Lake Summerville but only for social reasons with in-laws in the area.

We used to go to Fayette because it is heated but we've been just skipping the off season the last few years.

90% of my hours are at Lakes of Katy.

We also visit a secret location near Houston that I can't disclose. But I haven't taken my boat there. We use the buddy's boat.

This is making me want to learn. Would an old stars and stripes do me right? I'm 165lbs. I'm thinking 36mph @ 85' of wake line. I feel like if I'm going to do it I might as well try younger than older.

The stars and stripe will work if it happens to start and run the day you need it.

                  Two items:

                  1. the boom in that kneeboard video didn't appear to have the guy wires.

                  2. the first video of the nephew reminds me that the wax earplugs are a great safety feature.

                  thanks for posting

The stars and stripes runs like a dream. It's a friends boat who has had it since new. I think it has a somewhat new transmission actually.

Ok it's Saturday and I'm preparing now. It's windy right now so I'll do my best to find smooth water. If I don't find any then ill try tonight .

                      Thanks to everyone.

I hope your screen name is with you today. You might say "honey" two things could happen. I could get back in the boat a "man" (meaning you got up) or I will get back in here more like you. There won't be much in between without a CUP.

ok I have no Internet at our lake home except our cell phones so it's a bit hard to go on the forum.

It was very windy Saturday so I held off all day. At approximately 7:30 pm I found a cove and suited up. I grabbed the kneeboarding ( I will be purchasing a new one as the knee provisions don't feel good while sitting on it) and went out 100 feet.

First try the board was hopping so bad I felt like I was in a bull riding contest. I had her slow down to about 10 and I scooted forward then back on throttle slowly.

I slowly planted my feet and felt very good I noticed how you could turn your feet in a tiny bit and the spray got out of my eyes. I gradually stood up and wam!

Face plant so fast that superman couldn't react. I took a breather for about 10 minutes and repeated without the face plant. I learned to basically sit like your in a chair. But pressure leaning back against the rope. Towes curled up and stood up finally. I went about 25 maybe 30 feet and fell backwards.

I was done for the day due to me being 38 years old . It was fun and I'll do it again next weekend. I think a big part of my success was the anticipation of it.

I'm very pleased how it turned out. I did notice my jaw is sore this morning of which I feel happened when I face planted.

Oh and also noticed the area right outside the wake in the curl area was the best for me
