    196 asking prices

As I'm always curious what 196's are selling for, I'm getting surprised at what I'm seeing as far as asking prices. For example, there's an '05 on SIA for $33k. I didn't pay that for my brand new '06 back in the day. Heck, 2 years ago I paid $27k for my 100 hour '08LE. Are people actually paying these prices, or are owners just listing high due to the 200's price tag making them look like a bargain in comparison? Through the years, I've seen depreciation hold tight on some models, but never actual appreciation in prices. Makes me wish I kept my '06!

I should add, I haven't seen appreciation on late-model boats before. Obviously classic boats - Chris Crafts, etc.- can fetch a hefty premium.

last October I paid 24K for an 06 Limited w/400 hrs. I thought that was a pretty fair price.

Maybe prices in the northeast are out of whack compared to the rest of the country, but the numbers being thrown around seem awefully low.

$24k for a '06 Limited last year? Thats pretty darn low! 2 VERY clean '03 Limiteds sold on our lake last spring between $20-21k, so I would have expected a boat thats 3 years newer to have commanded more than a $3k premium. Wasnt '06 DBW, or was it a split year? That change is worth a few bucks, as it will appeal to all the serious skiers that would demand ZO.

$27k for a 2 year old '08 LE? Holy crap. I havent seen an '08 priced that low yet- Im guessing you got a bargain and sold it for more than you paid?

$33k for brand new '06? You gotta be kidding me... that had to have been below cost. I know the sticker on Dad's '03 LE when he bought it new was ~$48k.

I do agree that $33k for a '05 is outrageous... seems like $21-22k would be a lot more realistic.

What do you think is a fair price for a 2000 196?

I paid 22.5 for a low hours 2000 196 with a 502 Python. I figured that was a little high for a 2000, but the big block was rare and what I was looking for.

I paid $27,600+tax for my '06, then ordered a new trailer for just over $2k (got an Eagle at cost). As the owner of the dealership told me, it was a skinny sale, but not below his cost. Bought it in Feb '07, as it was a non-current. I am guilty of selling my '08 for $30k, so I did score somewhat on that one.

To be fair, I should add that CC offered the $2k "clear the decks" promotion on my '06 as well. But still...

There was a gorgeous 2000 that didn't sell for $15.5 on PN last fall, so it's hard to say? Timing and location are definitely key.

That 5.0L motor would be a major detractor for me, personally. I would put it at the low end of the price spectrum for that alone. $14-15k.

I was thinking along the same lines as Tim, with the 5.0. I wouldn't completely rule it out if I were shopping, but I couldn't see myself buying anything but a GT40 in that era. A python would be fun though!

Market value is determined by what one is willing to sell/pay. I just recently "downsized" to an '07 196 Limited Team (rare) with 300 hours that had been upgraded with ZO. It has every option available that year. I paid in the $27k range w/ trailer. I thought that price was fair considering the price of comparable boats. Low hour 196's in good shape are becoming more and more rare with each passing day. Therefore, I believe that is maintaining the higher than normal re-sale value. And, I don't begrudge someone asking/receiving top dollar for their boat - in the end, it benefits us all.
