    Newer Nautique or Pool

I currently have a 94 Sport with low hours (327). I've had my eye set on a newer Nautique (2006+) and been planning on upgrading the next couple of years...

My wife and I have been working out in the yard in the summer which leads her to think a pool would be nice afterwards. Both of our parents have pools, so she thinks we need to put one put in. Basically that will kill my plans for upgrading. Anyone have any thoughts?

    My basic options are:

    1) Keep 94 Sport and get a pool.

    2) Upgrade to newer Nautique, but no pool (wife would be against).

    3) Sell current Nautique and get a pool (I will fight against this one).

You didn't tell us what Nautique you would be upgrading to...

If you are going from DD to DD and you aren't a pro, get the pool.

If you are going from DD with with 5 temporary sacs to a 210 with 3k built in ballast, skip the pool.

New boat. A new pool will create more work. More work= less boat time. Use the parents pool and get the new boat. is #3 really an option?

In order to use the boat, you must place it in a body of water. Since it is a ski boat, one naturally assumes you are willing to get into this body of water (i.e., not the lower Mississippi). Thus, the boat effectively comes with a free place to swim. Buy the new boat, stop working in the yard until the water cools, and enjoy the new boat as well as the maintenance free pools provided by the parents.

Keep the old boat, use the river/lake as the pool, pay for kids college with pool money. Student loans suck.

If you must buy something, upgrade the boat. I LOVE Blue Ski's post.

            What's the upgrade to?

Where are you in Austin? How about keep the 94 and get a slip closer to the house to make hitting the lake that much easier.

No equation should ever end without a boat.

Pools require a lot of time, so unless you are getting a pool boy, skip the pool. You might want to question your wife is she gets really excited about having a pool and a pool boy!

There are several community pools in Austin that are pretty decent... Deep Eddy, Barton Springs, etc.

The answer might also depend on the age of your kids? A pool in the backyard is great entertainment for the kids during the summer break.

                I would upgrade a to V-drive. I've been looking at SV211s and 220s.

I trailer my boat right now. I'm about 4-5 miles from some nice marina's on Lake Travis. I tend to go to multiple locations: Lake Austin, Lake Travis, and Pedernales River (when full).

No kids right now, but one on the way.

                Anyone have both?

then there's resale. Any plans to move in the near future? A pool can make a house hard to sell. How about instead of a pool get a dedicated tow vehicle (aka Airtool) so when you're done in the yard the boat's already hooked up and ready to go. I'd be willing to bet if you do get a pool you're wife will be less inclined to go to the lake, also. A pool is WAY too much work and too much of a liability. Visit the soon to be grandparents. Might even run this by them and they might talk your wife out of it.

Yard already fully fenced and gated? I am thinking your homeowner's insurance policy carrier might be asking that question. Don't have a pool, so not sure about that.

Get a cheap throw away one from Wal-Mart and see how old it get really quick. Been there done that! you never have to pull the dead squirrels out of the lake.

To me ROI on a boat is better than a pool (neither is good). I've heard you only get 5-10% back on a pool.

The HOA doesn't have a pool in the neighborhood, but many neighbors do have pools. I pretty much have a dedicated tow vehicle now, but the boat is in my garage.

Doesn't it cost like 100 bucks for chemicals every time it rains?

I have a pool and a 2002 SAN. Been in the pool no more than two dozen times in seven years, take the boat out on average about 250 hours per year. Pool maintenance for me is a PITA, whereas most boat maintenance is enjoyable/necessary evil. I would love to fill mine in and build an extra garage, but that is a ton of effort as well, so I will just resign myself to complaining.
