Exactly my thought as well!! You need to get that trans in the hands of an expert ASAP, a majority of dealers and inboard shops will send transmissions out and not attempt to fix them in house. Also agree that the shop was right in recommending repair/replacement, your insurance guy is muckin up the program now.

BTW, to install the PSS you need to splice into your raw water supply with a tee, from the tee they will run the water supply line (about 1" dia or so) to the PSS. Not a big deal and a must have on a Vee-Drive.

If it's not inspected and repaired if needed with the initial claim and fails later the owner is out of luck with the insurance company covering it. I think you're problem comes with the mechanic not getting this approved with the insurance first and second they should have sent the trans out to a specialist. If they don't know how to put it back together how are they qualified to make a determination of it's condition?
Thanks for the feedback. I searched the internet and could not find anything about the tranny on a big prop hit. Maybe I shouldn't of let the adjuster know about the tranny being pulled but I didn't want to be stuck with the bill.

had a similar mishap with my 03 210 a few years ago, however i only had four minor fiberglass cracks going out from each of the strut screws, it only slightly bent the shaft, strut, and propeller but they replaced all, fixed the fiberglass (cracks didn't even go 1/8" deep), and buffed out the boat for me, was about 7k in damage, don't fret man they will have back good as new in no time, also i'm certain they had the tranny checked out also even though when it hit when about two seconds after starting off from a stop

I didn't have to wonder what I hit, I was standing on it! Fortunately there was no damage since I beached the boat in mud. You know your in trouble when you have to get a shovel out get your boat unstuck.
