Bad day- Strut, Prop, rudder damage- Boat US insurance

Monday afternoon we hit something underwater. We were pulling my son @ 16 MPH and the impact rocked the boat hard to the left, what I'd imagine what it would feel like if your tire blew out at speed. Didn't see what I hit and the depth finder was reading 17'. ??? We stopped shut off the boat and I checked underwater, the rudder was GONE, the shaft bent to the right, prop mangled. We managed to get back to the ramp and on the trailer before we took on too much water, and nobody got hurt. Below are some pics of the damage. I've submitted a claim with Boat US, does anyone have experience with them on the claims side? Any insight as to what I can expect.

    Thanks

I did almost the exact same damage two years ago to my 2004 210 with my claim going through BOAT US. Service was awesome. They were right on it. I can speak very highly of the company after this experience. The accident happened on a Saturday, I called the claim in Sunday and they had a surveyor in the area that Tuesday if I remember correctly. You get a claim # and can track your claim progress online which was really cool. Once the final bill came in, they sent me a check within a few business days to pay the repair shop and I was back on the lake.

For me, damage was estimated at $12K, my deductible was $300 (1% of boat value). I would guess you'll be in that ballpark as our damage is practically identical. The only issue I ran into in the repair was a difficulty finding parts as they were on backorder from Nautique. I ended up calling Nautique dealers all around the country looking for someone who had the correct strut sitting on their parts shelf. N3 had it, so I directed the repair shop there to procure it. They even over-nighted the parts since it was covered by BOAT US anyway.

Boat was up and running 3 weeks later. Without the parts trouble it could have been less than 2 weeks. My premium went up about $70 bucks or something the next year.

Sorry to see the damage to your boat, it makes me cringe. Sounds like everyone was OK which is most important. Good luck!!

Honda, I sent your map to JKSKI from TT and here is what he said about that spot. He is always on that lake and even plans for this Saturday. I wished you knew this stuff earlier...

"Yep, I know exactly where he was and he likely hit a stump although not the one I was referring to earlier. When you go along that shoreline headed east from the launch ramp you come to an island that looks as though you can go around it with a nice size cove between it and the shoreline and in normal water conditions we would make a turn in that cove to head back down the shoreline, but not now. That cove is riddled with stumps and if you are lucky enough to navigate thru them and think you can proceed to go around the back side of the island between it and shore, you will find yourself beached....we actually pulled a beached inboard off of there several years ago.

The safe route when headed east towards the island is to go between it and the sand island which is well marked with danger bouys and showing with the low water. Go between them and you are good, but try to go around either of them and I hope you have a good insurance policy because you are going to need it!"

Thanks, I just started a thread over there. I'm still worried about it because I really think I was pretty far North from the shoreline.

That lake has a lot of issues when there is not much rain, that damage looks like you hit a tall tree trunk, WOW! thankfully no one was injured from the impact. Good luck with the repairs

$4000 in fiberglass repair. Here's some pics of mine before, during & after. I was mistaken, my repair was closer to 10K not 12K. Just looked at the paperwork on my computer. Pictures are out of order but you get the idea. Click image for larger version

                      Finally

Boat US finally gave the OK yesterday. Hopefully they can get me back and running

Kmayotte, looks like I didn't do as much damage as you, my repair is closer to $6500. only about $2k in fiberglass repair.

from the looks of the damage, particularly the big scrape on the strut it appears that was a boulder you hit! I can't see a tree trunk mangling the prop and scraping that much metal off the strut. Anyway glad your back in the water!

total. There is a trans expert on ccfan that said it was actually standard practice to pull and inspect a transmission after a big prop hit and it is not uncommon to find damage to some degree. If it's not inspected and repaired if needed with the initial claim and fails later the owner is out of luck with the insurance company covering it. I think you're problem comes with the mechanic not getting this approved with the insurance first and second they should have sent the trans out to a specialist. If they don't know how to put it back together how are they qualified to make a determination of it's condition?
