2003 and up non-electric rear hatches

I have a 2002 SAN with the electric hatches. I'm going to reskin the sunpad and am considering switching to the non-electric hatches, but I'm not sure how the mechanism works. Could some describe it to me or snap a couple photos? How does the non-electric latch engage the engine divider top bar?

It's just a simple upside down L bracket. I have a 2003 216 that I want to convert over too.

Okay. So the bracket is just mounted to the channel that sits on top of the engine divider?
