Nautique lost a new buyer ..Is this how business is done??!

As many times as I've read of great dealers and great relationships on this forum, my frustrations with the dealer in my current area have caused me to post this thread. If nothing else, it may prevent others from my area from dealing with the same thing....

After a demo boat show at Russell Marine Ridge Marina prior to Memorial day I took a test drive on a 230 with the Sales Manager. He had one left and after sitting down he gave me a price and offered a trade in of $66K for my boat. Over the next few days while working on setting up financing, I shopped around to make sure I was getting a decent price on the 230. After finding of this and seeming somewhat unhappy with what I'd done, he re-evaluated the info I'd given and bumped my trade-in value to $70k bc of the trailor. I still continued to shop around and found that other dealers would offer the same trade-in value of $70k. I wasn't crazy about the color of the boat at Russell and told the dealer of another boat at another dealership with identical options and asked if he could get it transfered. He later told me that boat had been sold over the holiday however he was getting 2 more 230s in from another dealer and would contact me with their specs when they got in. Over two weeks past without a word. After a couple attempts to contact him with no return, I finally reached him for him to tell me they weren't in but he would email me the specs....nothing. A couple days after that I called only for him to tell me he'd sold them both BUT had one from the factory on it's way and would contact his rep and email me within the hour of its specs and estimated arrival date....nothing. Still nothing to date and Ive since contacted the dealer of the boat I'd requested a transfer of only to find that it never sold...still available now, over a month and a half later!

If that wasn't enough, I decided to look at a 210 a week or so ago at Kowaliga Marina, another location of Russell Marine, where I dealt with a different saleman. I liked it and even test drove it the following (this past) Sunday. After giving me his price I let him know that I'd dealt with Jeff at the other location and he'd offered me a trade-in of $70k..I even had an email to prove this. So after going between the computer and his desk calculator he said he could only wrap his mind around $67k and turned to show me this final value on the computer screen...never asked me a single detail of my boat other than the yr, make and model. He contributed the decrease in value to the reason that NADA adjusts their values each quarter. Unsure I decided to think about it and checked NADA myself. Adding the basic options my boat showed a value in the same column of $71k+...not including the trailor. The next (Monday) morning I contacted Chris and made my offer at a couple thousand less. He said he'd check and call me back and said he'd "lock the boat down so nobody else could sell it" bc "we'd make a deal". No call Mon, Tues, or Wed (even called an left msg on cell). On Thurs morning I caught him in his office. Seemingly surprised he said he thought Jeff was going to call me about the deal. He explained that after talking with someone he could now only offer me $60-61k for my boat...WTF? I expressed my confusion of how a trade-in value of $70k had been given multiple times by different dealers, including theirs, yet now it was $61k? All I got was "Im sorry" and he'd call me back. That evening at 5:15 he called and told me the best he could do was go with his original offer. I understood and said I'd contact him the following morning to let him know what I'd do. He said ok. That following morning at 10 I called to accept his original deal but before I could even get it out of my mouth, he stopped me to tell me that he sold the boat! Their dealership closes at 5pm and opens at 9 am...how in the **** did it sell?! Extremely frustrated, I said I thought that locking the boat up so nobody could sell it and we'd make a deal meant that the boat would be locked up so nobody could sell it and we'd make a deal! All I got was "I know, Im sorry" and since that was his only 210, he said he had a 226 available....not interested.

I've been in sales my entire career and see the way that Russell Marine treated this situation was subpar at best. I undertand a deal not working but this just seemed to go beyond that. They'll never see a dime out of me. Based on some of the territory rules I read about, looks like Nautique will never see a dime out of me either.

    Sorry for the long post...

I bought my first boat from kowaliga. It was a breeze. This was years ago though. Are you upset with the customer service or trade in? Check h20 sports Dothan. I'm not vouching for them though. What's ur current boat?

No I was fine with the trade in...just felt like one day we were working on a deal and the next nothing...how do you lock up a boat to make a deal then sell it the next day? Just felt like the overall process was handled poorly. Overall insulting. Plus I was quoted prices SIGNIFICANTLY less from other dealers and that was before being asked about a trade in.

Contact the area rep territory rules doesn't apply if they dont have a boat to sell you. Don't overlook the quality of the boat by the shortcomings of the dealer. My 210 is the best boat I have ever had . No problems in 2 1/2 years and over 500 hours.

It does indeed sound like you were treated badly. Sorry. I think like so many things these days it is hit or miss.

Sorry, no sympathy here. And I am not trying to flame you either, I can see you're frustrated, but this is what I see from your post. You exhibited hesitation by shopping around after the Memorial Day boat show deal and then indecision when in July you'd posted here about wanting a 210, plus looking at a 210 last week. If the 230 was available from the other dealer when you learned it hadnt sold after all -- and you really wanted it -- you could have pushed the deal through, in my opinion. Why do you feel they "owe" you something? Anyone experienced in sales would understand opportunity cost and marketing by scarcity. What you view today might not be available tomorrow. Dealers understand and in my view will assess you as a customer. If you want him to hold it, put your money down and get a deal done. Just my two cents.

i am confused. from what i gather, over the course of 2.5 months (memorial day to present), you never signed a purchase agreement on any single boat and continued to shop dealers against one another, and you are upset that guaranteed money was accepted from buyers that were more eager to purchase than you? maybe i am misreading something, but without a purchase agreement, nothing is locked in...

When a dealer says he'll contact you and doesnt? When they claim they'll email you within the hour a cpl times and doesnt? How do you say you'll notify me of a particular boat discussed when it arrives yet on a tues it hasnt gotten there yet but ill get the info and on thurs I CALL to be told its sold....after we discussed me buying it! When they say they'll lock the boat down and the next day its sold? Call after call and nothing in return. Cmon youre more intelligent than that. You obviously see something from my post that isnt there. I did ask about a 210 on here when it seemed the 230 was a hassle and i was lied to about another dealer selling the boat when it wasnt sold. At no point did i delay a sale to shop around. As you can see above, "Over the next few days while working on setting up financing, I shopped around to make sure I was getting a decent price on the 230." Is it common practice for a dealer to change their mind while youre working on finance approval? Wow Im way out of the loop. Maybe you paid cash. So forgive me for assuming that me being told "ok im going to lock this boat up so nobody can sell it" means exactly that. This 210 wasnt a wk or month long deal. It was a demo on a sunday, offer on a monday..silence on tues and wed after no returned call and the exchange you see above on thur and Fri. There was no guaranteed money on that Thur evening after close yet on Fri and hour after open a deal is done..seriously? Is that to much to expect from a dealer? If what you say is true then you're right, my expectations for a dealer and sales is too high

simmer down amigo. your original post was longer than Homer's Odyssey and Iliad combined. i realized that you were trying to illustrate your point effectively, but my public school education and lack of note taking skills made it tough for me to wrap my arms around it, hence the "maybe i am confused" comment. after all the total of boats mentioned was 7 over a time frame of memorial day to now.

the only comment i will make on the dealers lack of commo is that it appears they have been too busy to call you back because they were closing deals on boats that flying off of their lot.

it seems to me that cash is king. in the lack of cash, pre approved financing and a purchase agreement are king. i dont disagree that it sounds as if you got jacked around, but you are 2.5 months in to this boat buying process, and you appear to have flip-flopped on boats and still dont have financing ironed out, then maybe it appeared as if you werent a serious buyer.

your original post also reads as if you didnt accept the offer at 5:15pm, leaving the boat unsecured, until you attempted to secure it at 1000 the next day, at which point it has already been moved. perhaps you should have asked them to fax or email you purchase agreement at 5:15pm. am i reading that wrong also?

My apologies, maybe you're right. I assumed that when he agreed i could let him know the following morning that the boat would be secure until then. I was wrong. I failed to request a purchase agreement. Financing was ironed out long ago. In fact it was after i said i was good to go but was interested in another color that i never really heard anything with the first round of the 230. Checking my email/call records it was actually 3 1/2 weeks that i waited to be contacted concerning the boats that were coming in from another dealer. Regardless think it was all handled poorly. Ill know better next time..sorry for the lengthy rant

not what i was trying to say. you dont owe anyone an apology. and i dont disagree that you got jacked around. sounds like it is time to take your money to somebody who wants it more than the aforementioned dealer. all i was trying to say is that the once you have the deal you want it, sometimes it is important for the buyer to be just as aggressive as the seller in order to close the deal. not to say that you werent, just that your original post didnt read it to be that way.

                        1. Sell your current boat on PN in the next few weeks.

                        2. As the season turns, order what you want for Delivery by Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny.

You never heard this from me, but get a P.O. Box in East Texas (as humiliating as that sounds in itself) and order from Buxtons. (Or similar with White lake)

Mooney08 - I hate it when people don't do what they say, thats certainly frustrating. Is there a reason when you found the 230 at dealer #2 with the options and better color scheme you didn't just put a deposit over the phone (subject to water test) and go get it?

Somes you just have to strike when the iron is hot...

Yeah - OK would be better than East Texas.

He might also be able to buy Jeff's PN boat if it isn't sold already.
