G23 power

I live at an elevation above 4,000 feet and ordered a G23. 1st with a 450 and then heard that the 450 had issues getting up to speed with ballast, passengers and gas.
Can anyone confirm that?
I have since switched my thinking and looking at the Supercharged 550.
Can anyone elaborate on either engine in the G23.
Also, if you have the 550, how many gallons do you burn an hour?

I have been in several of them with both engines. The 450 has plenty of power, especially if propped correctly. At your elevation, you may need a different prop than stock. The 550 is just incredible, but requires premium fuel. Fuel consumption will vary greatly depending on weight in the boat and your specific usage.

this is my first post. i have ridden in a g23 with stock ballast, 8 people, and 409hp. i noticed it was much more sluggish to get on plane than my 230 with a 409 and similar set up. the dealer informed me that i could upgrade to 450 but needed premium fuel to stay at 450hp or would de-tune to 409. i'm interested in knowing what others know about this too.

like you, SLW, i am trying to figure out the best motor for the value...

My G23 with the z450 has no issues getting up to speed with full stock ballast and 4 to 6 passengers. We are running near sea level. I unfortunately have not looked at the prop numbers, or opened it up to determine top speed. But top speed will definitely be below 40 MPH. I have not calculated GPH yet.

It is a shame they do not offer the G23 and G25 with a diesel.

Just my $0.02 on a diesel powered inboard, mehh. I had the opportunity to ride in a diesel powered I/O recently, and while the power and torque are just fine, the sound(s) are terrible. I've taken for granted how nice CC's sound these days (I do MISS my old Python un-corked!), and riding in that boat would certainly been much nicer with a gas powered rumble out of the exhaust. Granted it was an I/O, so those almost always sound like blenders, but the diesel clatter was still there...

Nautique should work with mercedes and use their BLUETEC diesel engine so you could get diesel power and fuel economy with the quietenes of a gas. Although, you wouldn't get that heart racing rumble of a big gas engine.

Both the 450 and 550 require premium fuel. G23's with a 450 top out at 38 mph at sea level. 550 engine will achieve a top speed of 41 mph. 550 engine spins 300 rpm slower than the 450 at most speeds. 450 is propped pretty low with 12" pitch. I am not sure which prop you would use for more power. I have not found anything lower than a 12" pitch. 550's come with a 14" or 14.5 " pitch and still out perform a 450 in acceleration. This allows you some room to make adjustments in pitch. After driving a fully loaded G23 at sea level with a 450, I would highly recommend the 550XS engine for high altitude applications. Best I can tell, the 550 makes more torque at idle than than the 450 does wound up to 4000 rpm's. Nautique stopped offering the 343 in the G23 if that is any indication of how much power these massive boats require.

As shown, Altitude is a power killer. I live and race cars in utah 4200 ft. I have a similar set up on my car (that being a positive displacement blower). I have several friends that have the supercharged Cadillac that motor is based on. PD blowers make awesome torque, the torque is much more impressive then HP numbers. The torque difference should be significant. However the milage under load on a PD blower (at least in the cars) SUCKS!

But I'm not too sad for you, if you are buying a new G23 I suspect you can afford the gas :-).

Not too much more than xs550 i don't think. I e-mailed customer care at nautique and the guy sent back saying that he forwarded it to the department of engine designs at nautique to see what they thought about it.

We ordered the 25 with a 550. All customers ordering 23's or 25's have decided to go with the 550 after demo days in the 25 and 23(with 450's). High altitude is a definate 550 area.

I have a 23 with the 550 coming very soon. Gel date was 12/3, should be all set on 12/11!
