RE: Lake Hartwell SC
I'm a student at Clemson. You shouldn't have a problem finding a hotel in the Clemson area to stay at. There are boat ramps all over the place around Clemson as well. Your best bet for good water on Hartwell will be going a few minutes north on the lake from Clemson where there are lots of narrower areas protected from the wind and boat traffic. If you're considering Seneca (10minute drive from Clemson) you might also think about Lake Keowee.

RE: Lake Hartwell SC
I was on Hartwell last weekend for the first time. Hartwell is one of the largest lakes in the area, but I agree with cboland about checking out Keowee or Jocassee. The water will be a little colder on those two lakes, but the scenery is gorgeous. If you are still set on Hartwell, Clemson is a cool college town with a few good restaurants and there are a ton of places to launch at the lake. If you are planning on camping, Twin Lakes campground is close to Clemson and has a boat ramp. 12 mile is another close ramp to Clemson. There are tons of long coves all around the lake to board in. Downtown clemson has several good places to eat:
Acropolis (Greek)
Ancheaux's (Great blackened chicken)
Tigertown Tavern (good bar atmosphere)
If you are looking for a good "hole in the wall" burger joint, check out Mac's Drive In in Pendleton. It's only a few minutes from Clemson's campus.

RE: Lake Hartwell SC
Hartwell isn't as clear as Keowee. If you are staying near Clemson I would make Keowee the favorite. Jocassee is also nice (crystal clear) but Keowee is the better ski lake and it is also warmer because it is less deep with more finger creeks. Jocassee and Keowee are well marked and both are near full pool. Check dukepower.com for lake levels. You do realize that if you stay here long enough you won't go back home. Welcome to South Carolina.
