A friend of mine has 1991 nautique excel with the 5.8 pcm engine. It started losing power this weekend. It was only noticable when we were pulling up a rider and the engine had no power and could barely get the boat on plane. Sometimes when we were about to plane out the engine sounded like it was surging (what i call it) but it went from struggling and it would surge and sound like it normally does. also when it surged it was a huge gain in power. Once we were up on plane the boat ran fine. I kept thinking that this sounds like an ignition problem. I had a problem with my boat last year and it sounded almost the exact same as his but all i needed to do was replace the distributor cap. His engine doesnt have a distributor cap. So i was wondering where would be the first place to look to trouble shoot this problem. Thanks
