Thats what I did. My wife and I wakeboard together and drive each other. I stopped calling people to wakeboard who don't pay. I bought my first boat (91 Nautique Excel) 5 months ago (cash, no payments), I know from being the "regular" behind a friends' boats that if I'm going to get a call next time they go out then I HAVE to give gas money. Tell them Shred/ski=$$$

I think the dinner analogy is perfect. You don't expect invited guests to chip in (but most do bring a contribution like dessert), but if your buds always end up at your house every Sunday to watch football and eat your food and drink your brew, they should start bringing brew and snacks at least. If you rotate who's house you're at then it's even.

Seems that I've been pretty fortunate. I probably have, on average, 10 different "riders" out each year at one point or another, and nearly every one of them will drop $20 for each set. Most will even offer to pay gas for their significant other (if they ride).

With my normal riding buddy (probably 90% of riding is done with him), we typically just keep the tank full. We either fill up at the gas station after the session, or before it. Just double plug the boat (nozzle in each side) and fill it all the way up. Usually, that results in about $30 each. If we end up missing a time, we usually tend to make it even on the next fill up. Even my "guests" seem to offer most times, but if it's their first set of the year, I'll usually tell them that the first one is on me.

Pretty sure that if I always had someone who came out, but didn't pay, I just wouldn't invite them or would ignore their requests to ride.

I struggle to believe that there are guys that would ride regularly on someones beautiful Nautique and not offer gas money.

Nobody would ever expect money from friends/family heading for a cruise, but regular riders should exercise some commonsense and pony up.

How much is gas in the US? Down under we are paying just under $6 per US gallon.

Ok here is the deal. We all have friends that we love to be around however these friends may be the most tight with money or they just don't have money at all. How to solve it? Send an email with the list of things needed for the trip. Towing vehicle, gas, food and drinks. Tell them your wife just reduce your budget to probably make you not to go out that often. Tell them that you are not going to stop but need little help. Ask for help by putting one of the items needed for the trip. Call your frien that always is willing to pitch in and ask him to reply to the e mail. The rest of them will feel obligated to reply and help. If they don't reply find new friends. I have a friend that I love but he doesn't have any money. He is always helping me with setting, cleaning and providing maintenance to the boat. I don't need his money or anybody else that is willing to do the same. The rest, better put some money or your not my friend. Let me know if you decide to do this. Thanks

I look at gas money like going out to eat, if you have a friend that never pays and that bothers you, don't go to lunch with him, I boat because of friends ,with out them its just me and a boat. Life is too short, enjoy the ride, that's what its all about.

Agreed. If you are upset that someone didn't offer to pay for gas, don't invite them back. Problem solved.

No one likes to ask for money, and unfortunately, common sense isn't very common. Having one buddy give you money in front of the others certainly helps. Having that buddy ask the others how much they gave you would be another way to do it as they may then feel some pressure or the light may go on. If you have buddies who are strapped for $$$, make them help prep the boat and then clean to cover their cost, as time is money. My buddies who ride with me on a regular basis get the program. They've seen enough people not get the invite back if they didn't kick in or help clean.
