    2012 SAN 230 Engine Size

I am looking for a some input on engine size for a 230. Hoe does the 343 power the boat vs the 409 vs the 450? If you we're buying the boat, what size engine would you buy? Need some input.

    Thanks.

I regularly ride a friend's 2009 230 with the 409.. even with a bunch of extra ballast plumbed in - it's PLENTY. Great engine.

our 230 with the 409 was great with thousands of pounds on top of factory ballast.

409 for sure. We put about 5200 pounds of ballast in the boat, and it still runs awesome.

The largest dealer of Nautiques, and 230s, in the country gets the 343 for all of their stock boats...

We will put about 2000 over stock on occasion and the 343 handles it just fine....And for those worried about resale, I even made a few bucks on my last 230...Though I am sure the resale may be different in other parts of the country, down here in Texas, with Buxton gettign all 343s, you see a lot more of them than 409s...

My $0.02 is the 230 needs the ZR engine IF you plan on running either extra ballast or full of people with stock. My "evidence" is from riding frequently in a 210 with the 343, with Fly-hi on top of stock (about 2500#'s total 900 stock+400x2+500locker+300under front seats) the 343 works hard to get the 210 on plane (with only 1 or 2 people in the boat) this is with a 1579 prop, (it's better with a 1235 but that has other issues OT on this thread) so if you add the extra 500-1000 pounds that a 230 weighs over a 210, the 343 is going to be working hard (even with a 1235 prop) to get moving with anything over stock ballast.

Alliance, I agree with your assesment re: Buxton's ordering 343's on their 230's, seems that you Texans are "conditioned" to seeing the 230 with that engine and it doesn't seem to hurt resale. In what I saw in other parts of the country, 230 Excals taking longer to sell than a ZR engined version. Just my $0.02...

Altitude is going to make a difference also. I'm sure that plays a part in Buxton's decision to buy the 343 (perhaps subconsciously). The elevation of my house is 45 feet ASL. When I lived in Denver at 6500 ASL, the 343 would not have been sufficient. I don't know what elevation will require the 409, but it's somewhere between 45 feet and 6500 feet. I have a friends that runs a 24 ft Supra with 3k lbs of ballast in it with the 5.7 litre engine and has no problem getting it going (down here in Houston).

I've been running the 1617 on my 2012 210 with similar ballast to the one you described and it has NO trouble getting the boat moving. It is a nice upgrade over the stock 1579 and it doesn't have the prop burn issues of the 1235.

Remember the comparison with a 210 and the 230 aren't exactly apples to apples. The added wet surface of a 230 hull will help it plane easier than a 210 hull with the same weight.

I am running the 409 in my 11 230 and on several occasions had the boat loaded with 12 people and 2000 lbs of ballast and boat had no issues getting up. Very happy with my 409 and sure you will be too.

Agreed, 2011 230 with 343...factory plus 1600lbs with no issue.

I'm surprised, I thought everyone would want a 409 in their 230. I would be hesitant to buy one with the 343 because my goal would be to load it down (2000lbs over stock tanks at least) for surfing and I often ride with a bunch of people in the boat.

If you guys tell me I won't have any problem with a 343 and that kind of weight with 8-16 people in the boat then when I shop for one I'll consider a 343 for the right deal. (I know a re-prop is necessary for sure).

I was over it for the past few weeks, but my 230 fever is back because of this thread

I wonder if the fuel economy is better with the larger engine as well. It may not be working so hard.
