    back on topic

Now that winter is here I would expect to see more used mid 2000's 196's in the mid $20Ks. I have considered the purchase but would not consider paying over $22-23 for a 2002-2005 196. This is pre ZO so the price is probably $5k+ lower than a slalom purist would pay for a 08+ with ZO.

I agre with Mike. If you don't need ZO, save real money and pick up a 1st generation TSC for $13k-ish.

"Again, I think it is misleading to say that the 200 has a "better holeshot than the 196". While probably technically true, at least if looking at 0-30mph times, it assumes youre using the stock prop. Powertrains between the 2 boats are the same, and if propped the same, the 196 will be faster AND quicker due to its lower weight and lower drag."

I disagree. If on one had you want to complain about the higher rpm and lower speed of the 200 then it is consistent to allow that it has a better hole shot. If you want to theoretically re-prop the 196 then you must also agree that its top speed will decrease and rpm will increase. Yes, the lighter 196 with less drag would be a better "performer" across the board if you picked the right prop but only slightly better on both ends but it will still not be a 200 (based on comments from skiers with great experience behind both).

On another note, before 2010 I have never owned a Nautique and am not a good slalom skier but it is, by far, my favorite water sport activity. I also barefoot and occasionally wakeboard, etc. When I was looking for a new boat in 2010 I restricted myself to only competition ski boats. I did my research and picked the top few to go see in person. I will admit that I have never appreciated the looks of the 196 and the practical parts of a slalom tug didn't matter that much as I am a family/recreational boater/skier. I really went to see the 200 to do my due diligence and was shocked by what I saw. There was no question that this was the boat for me. Yes, I had to ski it and make sure it was fast enough for me to barefoot (just) but I love this thing. It is an open bow, which my family enjoys (happy family sure makes the experience better...although I have always been a closed bow fan) and I even have the tower with Z-5...so clearly I am not the hard core slalom tug owner.

Having said all of that, the boat is amazing. My wife (who has only been boating for a year now) has no problem pulling me through the course and making the tight high speed turn at the end. Did I say that I love this boat?

Point taken. Im not convinced that the 200 is actually faster out of the hole than a 196, even when propped way down in the stock configuration... but its plausible (the 1.25" difference in pitch is pretty big). I do agree that a 196 can be propped such that it would outperform a 200 down low and still be faster up top though- and that was my point. Thats the advantage of a smaller/lighter/lower drag hull.

As we see larger hp engine options becoming more common (409 and 450), the performance disadvantage of the 200 will be narrowed or eliminated... and Im all for that. Its great to see CC making strides in their signature slalom boat... its just disappointing to see them compromise on other design aspects in the process.

That 2008 on ski-it-again is a ski school boat - Seth Stisher's H2Osmosis. Ski school and club boats are typically cheaper. The good news is that South Carolina has a maximum boat sales tax of $300.

Looks like someone else has run into this issue. Not meant to even be removed, let alone opened with the engine in the boat? Yikes.

I saw that thread...interesting. I'm not sure what's different about my brother's boat, but the box opens up just as easy as our 196's did? It's a cat motor too. Just winterized it a week ago, and it was a piece of cake. My only complaint is I prefer how the 196 box tapers on the front end, making it a nice spot to put your feet while cruising. You can't do that with a 200.

@swc5150, does your brother's 200 have the "handles" on the cat converters? The top half of the clamshell on mine opens easily, but the bottom half is a pain. Other than that, no compliants, it was easy to winterize.

As for hole shot, I have not been behind any boats in the past several years with the exception of one club member's '10 MC197 that was lacking in hole shot, and I like a quick up.

It does have the handles. I wonder if we just lifted it very straight or something? I know even our 196's box could smack the risers if not lifted straight. Watch the next time we go to lift the box it'll be a pain in the butt. Even if it is, a small price to pay for such a fantastic boat

                                Not bad for a 2012 200. About 11k more than our 09 196.
