    1999 Super Air hull questions...

    Hi All,

I currently own a 1999 Super Air Nautique (see pic) and have a few questions...

I am not a fan of the decals on the side, nor the maroon on the boat. Other than the maroon on the side of the boat (under the rub rail only) everything on the boat is white. So on my list of winter boat projects is to pull the decals and make the whole boat white. So my question lies here- Would you all recommend taking it to a gel coat guy and having him refinish the boat all white, or would you simply put a white vinyl wrap on the side of the boat from the rub rail down. I talked to a gel coat guy and his main concern was whether the hull was actually maroon with white on top or vice versa. The reason for this is he stated that if the hull is actually white he can finely sand the maroon portions off, and refinish the whole outside (and fix and scratches, etc).

Any thoughts, recommendations, etc would be greatly appreciated on how to go about this the easiest way. Thanks in advance for your time!

Leave it original- looks great as is and I think most people would agree with me.

The burgundy is thru the gel aka its thick so re-gelcoating is going to be $$$$. If you want white a wrap is your best bet.

I understand why you might not like maroon, but those are the best decals ever. If I could have my pick, I would have your boat with a black stripe with those decals. Had I not bought my boat and waited a month, I could have, but alas... I did not know that a 99 in white/black was going to become available 60 miles from my house a month later... but I digress.

I believe, but cannot say for sure, that the gelcoat is solid maroon to the hull where the maroon is and solid white to the hull where the white is. I know you can sand both down and will still have the same color (at least to a degree). Personally, I'd learn to live with the maroon. If you change it, you'll then want to change your bimini. At that point, you are getting pretty pricey, and you might just want to sell the boat and buy another for about the same price in the color you want.

I think when the boat was made, the first color in the mold was the maroon. Then white was sprayed on top of that, and then the fiberglass, out to the thickness of the hull, stringers were laid in the mold, and areas filled with foam, and then motor frame, carpet, ETC.

So there is some white under the maroon. But how much, who knows. In the middle of the maroon, it may just be overspray, and quite thin.

It's your boat however such a unique year and graphics, would be a shame to see it changed from original. Scratches, if not too deep, can be sanded/polished out as can faded Gel.

Believe the color gel is the same thickness as the white gel. Re-Gel is quite a bit of work, how much is he quoting?? Would imagine a wrap would be a cheaper route just not as durable and reversible should someone else want to bring it back to original.

I agree. Wrap it if you don't care for it. That is a great-looking boat as is. It would be a shame to mess it up.

+1 to the above opinions. It's a very 'stand-out' boat and I personally would not change it (but I would put that pic in the que for next years calendar). If you really can't stand it my first choice would be to sell and get another, second choice is wrap it so you can undo it when it comes time to sell. JMHO those that remove decals make the boats look like a project boat, as well as those that put decals from wrong years. To each his own, but once a boat becomes a "project boat" the value is gone.

Agreed with the above my favorite colors and graphics also. If you really don't like it, it's probably less cost and effort to just buy a boat with the color you want or wrap it.

Those are probably my favorite graphics for a Super Air. I'd also say either wrap (te keep it original) or sell. And you know what, since it's almost X-mas I'd be happy to take it off your hands, and I'll give you $5k for it, right here right now!

Piling on, leave it! The problem you'll have with a "re-gel" job is it will NEVER be as good as what the factory could do. If you can't stand the color, then, sell it or wrap it up. Just my $0.02
